If you don't already know you need a locker, you likely don't need a locker. As far as the finances go, that's only a question that can be answered when the numbers are sitting in front of you with taxes and fee's all rolled in. The dealer isn't doing anyone any favors though, and this'll likely end up being many thousands out of pocket for a color change and feature you'll probably never use.

    2017 Tacoma OR 4x4 (formerly a 1998 SR5 PU, 2002 OR 4x4, 1995 4x4 4Runner, 1985 4x4 Toy PU) ... and RIP’s (rust in pieces) to a Bronco II 4x4 & S10 Blazer 4x4
Crawl control is a nice OR feature also. I’ve used it twice in 75k miles, locker 0 times and I do off-road a lot on mine roads and in desert mountains. Just have to pick your lines well and have some armor underneath if there are rocks.

If you save your money for off-roading capable armor and lift, you could swap it out if you really want a OR later on, but honestly, I also think it’s a waste of money if you already have a 4x4 and are paying a lot more just for a locker.

I’d probably look at getting a set of all terrain tires and calling it good. But that’s just me…

    Work in progress...
My brother has the OR and I have the Sport. I have added the extra shocks, sliders, bumpers etc. My brother has sliders on his OR and rest is stock. So we went out in the SW Arizona Desert and compared the two. The OR rear locker and creepy crawly made inching it's way up some steep loose rock staircase type of climbs look easy. I just use the old tried and true momentum technique to get to the same places. Also I am not ashamed to admit that I will actually seek the easiest route to get where I want to go. And I believe that is what you have to ask yourself "do I want to go around the mud pit or through the mud pit?" 75 percent, if not more, of the vehicles I see "stuck" out here could have easily gone around the obstacles they ended up stranded in. But, for sure I would love to have the Off Road over a Sport if I was starting from square one. Here is what you do. Go to the dealer and see what the price difference is. Do you have the cash to make up the difference and do you want the Off Road enough to hand over a bag of Benjamin's? If you answer yes and it's not the kids milk money then you can't go wrong. Anyways, just how I've come to handle decisions like this over years of making bad decisions. I will add a photo of my 17 Sport because I like to look at it, even on my laptop.

Actually there are two options to override it now if you research a bit. I have one of those options installed on my taco and I can use the locker whenever I want just like my old zr2. I don't get this the locker will barely ever get used argument and I never have. I had my zr2 for 6 years and I used the rear locker all the time and the front only as a get out of jail free card. Lockers are incredibly useful tools. I see lots of people stuck on the lake in winter because they can't lock the rear.

Do what you want op if you want the larger rear end/locker on the offroad go for it. Then install the anytime rear locker mod. If your finances allow it I say go for it. But what do I know I'm just some guy lol.

Need vs want…pro vs con: All good to know. When you have read all this and understood…throw it away and go with your gut. Because the gut is never wrong.

I was close to paying off my 2020 SR5 2WD AT…but the urge to get an 4x4 OR MT led me to get a 2023.
It sent me back about one year in payments…but I love driving it. I also wrestled with getting a 2024 but I like the looks of the 3rd gen a lot more. It sucks driving something you don’t love.

And if you’re ’toying with the idea’…it means money is not really an issue. But get exactly what you want.

Wants ARE needs. If I WANT a rear locker, I sure-as-shit NEED to have one to get what I want. If I WANT a Honda Transalp 750, i NEED to buy one in order to have it. :D #kingofjustification

The new transalp looks boring. Just like my 19 africa twin is. Reliable as hell sure 60k km no issues but also boring as fuck. My 701 enduro helped me realize that lol. That bike is a rocket ship now that it's opened up and tuned, 5th gear power wheelies at 114km/h never gets old. My brother agrees and he rides a '20 1100 twin.

Go to the dealer and see what kind of a deal they can put together for you.
Note that the Sport and OR have roughly the same MSRP.
So you are really only looking at a difference in value for the mileage.
NOTE: I would have been happy with a Sport, but my OR is bad-a$$!

Lol I come from supermotos and dirtbikes I can't get away from it. The at is a perfect bike for my yearly trip from mb to bc though. Can't bring myself to get rid of it.

Same here - so far I have not needed it - used it a couple of times just to exercise it I guess and to see what it was like. Maybe as I progress to harder stuff I may need it but so far no.

I come from sport bikes and knee dragging and a low-side into a telephone pole. Now having a bike is one-more-option to bug-out, or get somewhere, or get solitude, or, or....There is a saying a lot of Army vets understand when asked about how they run. "I cannot run very fast but I can run pretty far." That's the Transalp for me. PLUS - ItchyBoots rides a honda and she's all kinds of adorable so...it MUST be good, right? :p

It's definitely good. I'll probably end up with a 890 adv r to replace my twin soon enough. You've got a great point. Having a bike to just get away from it all is a thing many people will never get to experience. Best feeling ever being in 2 wheels.

Not needing the locker, is some's personal experience/needs, not an argument. If it works for you, then great, I was merely stating it is nice to have, but I damn sure wouldn't take a loss on my trade in, to get one.

I had a choice and chose the sport. I drive on road 99.9 percent of the time and appreciate the higher handling in heavy freeway traffic. I only need 4 wheel drive for the very occasional snow.

Dude. Stick with the Sport. There are better aftermarket lockers and the crawl control is less useful than a sunglasses holder.

You will also gain a spot for a second battery up near the passenger side firewall where your Sport's ABS valving sits. The OR and PRO do not have the ABS valving there because of crawl control making it the PERFECT place for a second battery. That is the only bummer I see in my '21 DCSB TRD Sport. Does it justify the trade-in? I don't know for you. Not for me. But that is me. You do you - just something I wanted to point out.
