Should I Trade in my Tacoma now

All, hoping you guys have some thoughts on trading in my Tacoma. I posted a long time ago with the same question but obviously didn't pull the trigger and have some updates.

I have a 2006 Tacoma, SR5, double cab, 4WD, short bed, 87,000 miles. Frame was replaced in 2015 due to the recall. No accidents, in very good condition.

Need help in deciding if I should trade in my truck now or wait. I've been offered a trade in of $11.5K and feel like I could get a little more, maybe $13K. KBB private party is over $16K. A dealer near me is selling new Tacomas at MSRP. I've been saving so I would not have a monthly payment for the new Tacoma. On my truck I'll need new tires by the fall, replace the foam in the driver's front seat, a new wheel bearing and a couple of other minor things. My guess is between $1.5K and $2K. I'm not simply trying to talk myself into a new vehicle. I'm honestly on the fence. My main concern are future repairs. If I put $2K into it today, then shortly after something happens...I have to fix it since I just put $2K into it and so on... I acknowledge my truck has been issue free and low miles, but it is almost 16 years old. My own opinion is that MSRP prices will continue to rise at a higher rater than they have in years past. New prices will jump and my truck value will drop. One added wrinkle is the unknown regarding the next gen Tacoma. I'm guessing MSRP will be higher and maybe I don't like it (looks, 4 cylinder turbo, etc.). Just curious as to what you guys think. Thanks

I think you should keep what you have but every situation is unique. It may be 16 years old but is not even broken in yet at 87,000 miles. What is making you consider a third gen? Those repairs you are talking about for your 06 are minor and routine maintenance which is to be expected on all vehicles. Let's say you keep your truck and end up putting an insane, unrealistic $10k in repairs. You still have money left over because you didn't go spend much more on a new vehicle.

    Just my .02 cents.

You'll probably get the same exact answers as last time. No one knows your exact financial position or can measure your likes/dislikes between the two trucks.

I say go for it if your locality/state doesn't punish you with exorbitant property taxes like here in Virginia then get the new truck. Additionally if Toyota will offer a very low APR then you may want to take it in case inflation continues to blast off.

If you have the money, I’d upgrade. Yes you might get more for private sale but that also comes with the inconvenience dealing with selling it. If it was me I’d take trade in and drive away in new truck! Different if you didn’t have the money but sounds like you have been planning for this purchase.

    Good luck.

You’re going to trade in a car because it needs tires?
Wait until you find out the next one eventually needs tires.

wheel bearings are ~$300 for fronts
I saw a free drivers seat a week ago. Maybe on here I forget

I hear the 3rd gen motor is unreliable. I guess you can let us know

dealers have been up charging new cars.

if you want any upgrades, 6112 is still $700 regardless of truck year. Unless you want to spend $40k and $700/mo for years on something that has pencil thin blue and yellow trash can shocks

mine needs more. Carrier bearing, rear axle seals, probably rear brake work. 160k mi. Just an excuse to improve wrenching skills.
Still costs money whether it’s a payment or new parts.

would only consider switching to something like a 5th gen T4R because in some ways it’s better, but in other ways it’s not yet still costs more.
cheaper/older = more money for upgrades everyone wants
    Rather have a built V8 4th gen runner than a stock 5th

idk what’s inconvenient about waiting for someone to show up with the right amount of cash and signing over a title

If your truck was built in the mid/later part of 2006, I’d keep it.

The early 06’ trucks did have the old style head gaskets. They have been known to fail.

    I say keep it.

If it's your only vehicle, trade it. If your job requires reliable transportation, trade it. Yep, even new trucks break and need repairs, but, your 16 year old Tacoma is at the point where "normal" wear and tear could cause nuisance, but required repairs and tie it up in a garage. If it's a second vehicle, keep it.

At the rate your driving you’ll be dead before the truck dies. Keep it.

    OME and worth every penny.
I wouldn't. I know I could drive to California tomorrow if I had to in a 23 yr. old one.

Prob. throw a new radiator in beforehand but wouldn't worry about anything else.

First off, I wouldn't trade it if I could help it. After owning a 3rd Gen, there's no way I'm going back to that. I'd wait for the next gen Tacoma to see.

A lot of good input here.

another aspect is that many people still daily drive 95+ first generations and have plenty of assurance they will continue to be reliable for years to come. I see several in my neighborhood with families and seem to be just fine. At least I still see them driving around every day.

That’s just speculation from my vantage point though

    Holy crap,

No offense ( but when ever someone says that there is a little offense right?)

    1. If you like your truck keep it,if there is something out there you like better go get it.
    2. If it is a financial move, and you come out better do it.
    3. If you are trolling, IT ain’t Friday yet.
    4. You are asking the internet for advise? You’d be better asking Dr. Phil.

Otherwise be an adult and manage your life. Jeez. How long it take you to decide what you want to eat for dinner?

(Can I save this for my Friday thread, I am behind )

Use your head and gut, there’sa reason your asking and if you don’t want to sink another 2k into it this year move on, third Gen are great!

2k into an almost 16 year old truck isn’t bad at all especially if majority is tires. That’s basic maintenance and something that’s expected ~ not a surprise expense.

I’ve had a 3rd gen for over 6 years and it’s been great. Only 52k miles on it. I also just got slightly used tires for $200 from this site. And had those tires for over a year no problems. An expense I expected to pay over $1k for. You can research and find good deals to save your budget

not sure I’d say 3rd gens are great as hundreds of people have had many problems with it, also blasted all over the 3rd gen forum. I mean how many people buy a new 2020+ and have a third break light leak…. And been like that since 2015

23yo ones are currently used as workhorses in middle eastern and African armed conflict

It’s been 16 years. If his was affected by a bad head gasket it would’ve shown by now. Not that hard or expensive to change a head gasket.

Comes down to personal choice..have you DRIVEN a 3rd gen? sat in it and tried it on? does it feel better than the one youre driving now? You say its not about the bright and shiney, so then it comes to what FITS you and your life. If it was me, and I was as happy as I am with MY truck...I dont want a new one as mine fits me perfectly..
