Should I trade my '08 for a '11??

Dealer installed Leather, Truck Cover USA roll up cover, Pop n Lock, Bilstein 5100's on 4 corners set at 1.75, Rear Spring TSB. USA Spec iPhone adapter, 265/75/16 Mickey Thompson ATZs.
I got a great deal in Febuary of 09 on my 08 prerunner... Almost 9k off the MSRP. I couldnt pass that deal up when I came across it. However it was only for 08 Prerunners. I really wanted a 4x4 but there were none left to be found and they only had a $1,500 rebate.

So here I am in 2011... my 08 pretty much paid for. Still wishing I had the 4x4 version and wishing I had done a few things different on the one I have.

I installed a roll back cover which is awesome... I installed the pop n lock at the same time so I have keyless entry / auto locking bed cover. Works really well. However the bed on the Tacoma is so shallow it is not always practical to have the roll cover. Now I am thinking I want a shell. Maybe a Snug top or a Leer with a rack on top. I paid $1,400 bucks for the roll top... if I buy a shell I will take a hit on that thing for sure.

Also... I am digging the wheels on the FJ Crusier trail teams edition... I see the new TX Pro Tacoma has those same wheels. Sweet....

Mine is also Black Sand Pearl... which I like... but I like the new 2011 black better. It is more of a true black.

And... I installed the 5100s to level out the front. I am not very pleased with how it drives like this. I wish I had went with a more complete lift with new UCAs.

So I was thinking that maybe instead of adding a shell, new lift and new wheels I would just trade for a new TX model that already has all that... then just add the shell and go get the lift I should have gotten in the first place.

Am I crazy? Is this just me being selfish and self centered? I am thinking yes..:D:D

I wonder what I could sell that roll top for?

Oh ya... I also installed leather seats in my 08... they are great... I would want to do the same if I traded.

Would anyone give me 34K for my 08..:eek::eek:

I would make this trade in a minute if I could get the same rebate on the 2011 model that I got on the 08.

BTW... I also bought an 08 FJ a few weeks later and got an even better deal. They sell used today for more than I paid new.

Financially, you know your situation better than anyone so that part is on you. It sounds like you have some regrets that would be fairly expensive to fix although I don't think as bad as you're thinking. The 4x4 is the only real thing you can't feasibly go back and add to your '08 so if you really want 4wd, you need a different truck. I highly doubt anyone will give you $34,000 for your '08 prerunner... if you find someone who will, let me know, I've got a nice 2007 I'll sell them for $33,000 :D

Oh, and of course it's selfish! On that note I say go for it!

Unless you really need the 4x4, you could just add a locker and keep the Prerunner. No truck payments is awesome.

Unless you regularly run around in the Georgia clay I'd say keep what you got. The Prerunner is more than capable of handling most minor offroad stuff. Once your's is paid off, find a older Tacoma 4x4 & you have the best of both.

Sorry...not to start the prerunner 4x4 arguement. But a prerunner with a locker is no where near and will never be as capable as a 4x4. Otherwise toyota wouldn't make a 4x4 and only make prerunners.

How many people buy 4x4 and never use it, or never actually need it? Unless your buying the truck with the intention of offroading or towing a boat, a locked Prerunner will save money.

If the OP hasn't needed 4x4 in the 3 years he's already had his truck, adding a locker and keeping it would be a better deal than trading for a 4x4.

Everytime I been on a trail and there was an open open 4x4, he at least had to get dug or pulled once. And me none.

if you feel comfortable with the trade then do it, but if you have to think twice about it, don't.

4wd drive will always be better then 2wd, locked or not, but i have seen some locked 2wd's go through some sketchy shit. i have a 2wd and there have been times where i WANTED 4wd, but never NEEDED it.

oh, and 34k for an 08 prerunner?... yea your crazy

If you regret getting the prerunner, then get a new 11 4x4. But then again, how much are you gonna need a 4x4 in Georgia anyway? You offroadin much? If not, keep the prerunner.

And BTW, aint no one in the world thats gonna give you 34 large for yer 08. I wouldn't even give that for an 11! By doing mods and stuff to yer truck, you gotta expect yer not gonna get yer money outta them in the end.

Wait till you pay it off, that way you have more power during the purchase. As it stands now, you are still making payments? so you are going into the deal on the downside with them having a bit of leverage, if they finish the remaining payments for you, or tacking the remaining balance onto the new vehicle payment.

Save up some duckets and just wait for the payoff/title on the 08.

I'd spend $5000 and buy everything you want for your existing Prerunner. Sell what you have on it now to recoupe the price probably closer to $3000 after selling everything. With that you could buy new rims/tires ($1500), Coilovers + UCA's ($2000), and a shell ($1500). If you wanted to throw an extra $500 at t you could get an aftermarket locker also.

I wish I didn't have a truck payment even though mine is pretty low ($275) based on what I threw at it upfront.

Wow... Lots of interesting posts here.

My Prerunner has the TRD offroad package so I have a locker.

Do I need 4x4? Not really.... I have an FJ Cruiser that is 4x4 and I also have a "restofied" 76 Ford Bronco that is lifted, locked and everything else you can do to a 35 year old truck... it is awesome offroad.

However... I live on the side of a mountain... Back when I had an F150 4x4 I used to load a trailer full of mulch and pull it all across the front sod without slipping and sliding... cant do that now with this truck.... locker or not it gets stuck. The wife drives the FJ so I cant depend on it... the Bronco doesnt pull trailers well at all.... too much lift and tires too big.

I also do a little hunting and fishing... sometimes I do not go into areas because I am afraid I may get stuck.... the prerunner may do just fine but I do not like to take those chances when I am alone.

Snow sucks... yes even in Georgia where it snows once every 10 years.... I couldnt get to my house twice in the last month because of it... of course the wife did just fine in the FJ... BTW... the TRAC system in the FJ is incredible on the snow.... that thing was like a tank.... my prerunner was like a bicycle in the snow... no good. If TRAC works as well on the 2011 Tacoma as it does in the FJ it will be an great upgrade.

I do agree though... it seems like a waste of money to trade for basically the same truck.

Hmmm... I do like reading peoples opinions though.

P.S. I was just kidding about someone giving me 34k... I know it isnt worth that... it was humor....

    Greg
