Where can I read more about this? I was under the understanding that the VQ38DD was an evolution of the rest of the VQ series, and I’ve never seen a Mitsubishi logo on my vq40de

Edit: since I’m in this thread, my 2007 frontier has been fucking great. A few warranty issues out of the gate, but it’s held up fine. The vq engines seem to be solid - I’ve had the intake cover off once to change spark plugs. Did front wheel bearings at 120k or so, rest is pretty much untouched.

I feel like I need the following:
    4x4
    Apple Carplay
    heated seats
AT (in case my wife ever has to drive it)
    adaptive cruise

    I'd like:
    360 view camera
    heated steering wheel
an unusual color (not black, white or gray)

I could probably refine this list quite a bit if I think about it

Do you like a stiff sporty ride, or a soft floaty ride, sunroof or no sunroof? Unfortunately no trim levels offers a heated steering wheel.

I will tell you that you'll have to settle for whatever is on the ground or whatever is being built. Meaning if you want some of those options you may have to spring for something that is loaded.

I'd say you need either the SR5 4X4 with the premium package or the TRD offroad 4X4 with the premium package. Add the advanced technology package if you really want the 360 view camera (Toyota calls it Multi Terrain Monitor). I don't think a heated steering wheel is available? You can also go with the TRD Pro but that costs more.

We had almost the same wants and needs, and we ended up with this: It's our 3rd Tacoma.

Based on what you guys are telling me and what I’m seeing online, when I trade I suspect an SR5 with premium package will get me most of what I want.

I had to leave work early today to go to the dentist, I drove the truck to work today. When I got in the Apple CarPlay was working again, go figure!

At this point I’m about 95% sure my next truck will be a taco, it is just a matter of when.

I probably wouldn’t base my purchase decision on Apple CarPlay

The only thing that a tacoma has over a frontier is a plethora of aftermarket bolt on off road parts.

Both trucks are basically the same thing.

Want to bolt a bunch of shit on your truck??? Tacoma wins, hands down.

Don't get any vehicle that is the first year of a redesign.

Your Frontier will have a Taco beat on a few things. Power, transmission performance, and seating position are common comparisons between the two where most say the Nissan is better. You need to go test drive a Tacoma to see if you can live with anything you feel is a downgrade.

I did just that, and had the 4X4 SV. Had many Tacomas over the years and jumped on the new Nissan when they came out. I loved the looks and the improved interior. I know it was a first year truck, but I had a noisy windshield seal issue fixed under warranty but they had the truck for almost a month. The dealer did give a rental. I also had multiple squeaks and rattles in the cabin I could never did track down. I was also not a fan of the SV wheels, and the five foot bed just seemed smaller than the Tacoma. The power from the engine was nice, but that 8 or 10 speed transmission did shift a lot. I know people don't like the Tacoma, but this is a totally different feel. In the end I went back to what I felt comfortable in and got a 2022 Tacoma Sport with the six foot bed. Better for hauling bikes with.

tell me about it LOL. The 4R is a MILF-mobile, 1:2 are MILF drivers in my area. The Taco is looking to be the same.

Eh, I'd just work through the bugs if the dealership is decent to deal with. I'd trade the SV on a Pro-4x over a Tacoma.

Well as long as you are under warranty id say wait for the redesign 2024. No point in trading in a new truck for another new truck that is going to be the outdated truck in short time.

Don't know why Nissan don't sell the Pro4x king cab in the US. Same as Toyota don't sell the manual OR access cab.

US truck market is much larger than CA. I'm sure both trucks would sell very well in the US.

Nissan did drop the driver's side tow hook on 2023 Frontier S, and some 23 Pro4x have the air dam added to the front bumper.

Not sure where you've sourced your info but the Frontier is completely unrelated to Mitsubishi products. It's based on Nissan's F-Alpha platform which has been around since late 2003. It has a Nissan VQ38DD engine and Jatco (Nissan) JR913 transmission which is a essentially the Mercedes-Benz 9G-Tronic. VQ series engines have been around since 1994.
