As a second gen owner, I can appreciate my 2nd gen, and like the improvements the 3rd gen as well. :)

The gear hunting is no where near the same in the 2nd gen. I don't live in a very hilly area but I don't have that great hunting issue with my truck. Now, sometimes on a downhill at a slow speed it has a hard time picking a gear lol. But that's less than 1% of the time I'm driving it.

the reason the 3rd gen loses is because toyota has programed it for fuel economy. the power plant in the 3rd gen (atkins cycle engine) has more raw horse power (about 42hp) than the 2nd but again toyota tuned it in its programing to go for fuel economy first. im sure if you could get it reprogramed you could get it to go alot faster.

It seems like all the car manufactures are doing this. My wife's 2013 Acura awd had a 5 speed very fast out of the hole. She bought a 15 and Acura now has a 9 speed transmission. Slow out of the hole.

    Interesting.

I HATE the way my 2nd gen looks. But I use it as a truck, so I close my eyes when I walk up to it.

I LOVE LOVE the first gen. However, buying a used Tacomas, as we all know, makes no sense with the high resale.

I think the 3rd gen is the best looking after the 1st gen.

    Just my opinion.

    Different strokes and all...

Then the question is what the hell are you even doing in this section? Don't you have a life?

    Absolutely!

My girlfriend likes "bear" men, i.e. fat and hairy. I like body builders.

Same goes for trucks. She likes Raptors. I like Tundras/Tacomas.

    :)

You're spending time in the section of a vehicle you hate and don't want, and are bad mouthing it. That's kinda pathetic.

So did OP make a decision yet? If I'm reading this right, he's paid off his 2nd gen and can get a 3rd gen for only $4400 more than his trade in? Seems like a no brainer to me, why WOULDN"T you take that deal?

Well if he's happy with his current truck, he shouldn't feel forced to buy the new one just because it's a great deal.

I've had my truck for over 11 years now and this is the first time i've ever heard about paint problems.

Have I been living under a rock

It's considerably less subjective and much more factual than most haters on here realize.

    - exterior looks are more modern
    - interior finally looks like it's from this decade (the 2nd gen's interior was already outdated on the day it was released - it's an embarrassment)
    - tech is finally from this decade
    - considerably safer for both passengers and pedestrians
    - better fuel economy
    - higher clearance from the factory
    - will hold its resale better long-term than previous generations as newer vehicles are always more desired by the general public
    - the "issues" are vastly exaggerated and extrapolated from a minor group of problematic vehicles to seemingly every third gen, and any real problems are pretty much guaranteed to be addressed under TSBs/recalls in the coming months/years - all under warranty and at zero expense to the consumer

All that for a meagre $4400? It's a no brainer.

OP can certainly wait until there are tons of 2017s on the market, or however long he wants, but at the end of the day if he posted this thread, then he wants a third gen, plain and simple; and sooner or later he'll buy one. The question that remains is whether he wants to spend $4400 right now, or considerably more later, for exactly the same vehicle.

There's actually quite a few of us that upgraded from the 2nd gen and never looked back.

I'm a fan of all Tacomas. My first ever car was a hand me down '86 truck. I have a place in my heart for Toyota trucks (not their cars -- except for the '93 Supra TT)

One thing I'll add to this is that I believe the late-year 2nd gen's looks will age better than the third gen. The third gen looks better right now (personal taste, of course), but in ten years, I think the 2nd gen's cleaner, simpler exterior design will stand the test of time better. Similar to how the E46 3-series BMW has aged - it's still as gorgeous as the day it was released because the design is simple, yet classy and sporty, whereas the subsequent generations all looked good for a couple years, but quickly faded into the "nothing special" category.

What is it that makes you think the paint on 2016s is any better quality than on the 2015? You only be gaining a year on repainting and you already have the 2016 wheels..............

I agree that the 2nd gen refresh looks awesome. If only they refreshed the interior a bit when the truck was released.
