First Gens have always sold for a decent amount of money (KBB even rates them higher than the 2nd gens). To many it was the last real "mid size" or "mini Truck" Toyota made before the 2nd gen. I wanted a first gen before I bought my 2005. Couldn't find any on the lots. For a no frills, simple every day truck the 1st Gens were hard to beat.

They've pumped out so many 2nd Gen Tacoma's, you'll always have an easier time finding one versus a well taken care of 1st gen. Toyota dominated the mid size truck market and made a name for themselves with 2nd gens.

A used 2nd Gen Tacoma is just another used Tacoma, it will depreciate accordingly.

They produced a bunch of 1st gens too. And guys years from now will want a clean 2nd gen with the powertrain and simplicity compared to a 3rd gen, time will tell, but willing to bet it will fetch similar all conjecture right now.

I'm sure the same thing was said when people went from 1st to 2nd gen Tacomas.

And clean, last year first gens are commanding a nice resale price: https://www.cars.com/for-sale/searc...&page=1&perPage=50&searchSource=GN_REFINEMENT

    2001-2004's getting/priced at $18000, 75% of their value 12 years later.
    http://www.autoblog.com/buy/2004-Toyota-Tacoma/specs/

People buy them because of their known QDR, which the 2nd gen has proven, and hopefully the 3rd gen will too.

My point is the sky didn't fall when new engines were introduced for second gens, people gladly traded in their 1st gens for 2nd gens and didn't look back.
3rd gen engine and powertrain is just fine and in many aspects superior to a 2nd gen.

Roger, like I said they are different trucks across all gens and each gen has its strong and weak points. The 3rd gen powertrain serves a purpose, higher MPG while keeping/slightly increasing capabilities of the previous (horsepower, towing), but it is a more complicated engine and still has its time to be proven which I'm sure it likely will. The 2nd gen is a solid tested powertrain. My biggest question with the 3rd gen would be the new transmission. My point was the 2nd gens will likely follow the trend of the first and hold value to some people who prefer less gizmos, a simple and proven platform instead of a new 3rd gen, not that the 3rd gen isn't.

Agree. Which I said, at the end of my posts just an opinion". In all reality though... white appeals to most. Yes, I agree, I like different colors and styles too. It's what makes the world we live in interesting and fun!

My 2C I guess. I have the 2016 - I had a 2012 DCLB Auto I believe it was before, in some ways I prefer the 2012.. I think it was a smoother truck overall, my 2016 feels more mechanical. The way I liken it is my Ducati motorcycle to my Honda. The Honda purrs. The Ducati, clacks and whines and vibrates... The engine noise is definitely more pronounced. It's much louder in the cab, I hear the new atkinson cycle going on and off. It's rather annoying to be honest.

I have the '16 AC 6spd Sport. I do love it, but I would have regretted big time going from your truck, to my truck ESPECIALLY having it paid off. At first I was like HELL YEAH, but now I'm like, it so isn't worth it. I get 14.3 mpg in the city, 22mpg on the highway. Nothing amazing. All stock except for a tonneau that in all theory should help MPG.

I do love the electronics, but being so integrated, I can't upgrade much as I don't want to lose the dash integration.

The truck overall is really nice, but it just isn't worth a potential loss on your current truck for what is a first year release. I'd take what you'd spend in losses, and interest on new payments and upgrade the ol' girl a little. A new tonneau, a small lift, who knows, it'll still be less than what you'd lose.

    Good Luck!

I personally am very happy that i have a 2015 2nd gen, instead of waiting for the 16. I would never buy the first release of a new model, but thats just me.

Consider tax, license, insurance, extended warranty, maintenance agreements, etc. If they offer more than you bought it for I would remember the proverb: "If it's too good to be true, then it probably is". IMO, there has got to be something else they are going to sell you. If they gave you a new model year for $4,400, they wouldn't be in business very long.

THIS ^^^^ I made the same mistake. I love my 2016, but the cruise and transmission can drive me nuts. The 2017 should hopefully resolve these issues. Live n learn, but I still support Toyota trucks and really am thankful for my truck.

You can't read and your a hypocrite. The member was condescending I was not, I simply stated facts, he bashed or tried to miscue those facts, not once did I say the truck was terrible, the whole thread is OP asking advice on trading his truck, we stated resale, etc. and our opinions to help him. How does this qualify me as stirring the pot, please point exactly to an example in this thread, you clearly did not read it and again are on your witch hunt making me out to be some evil 3rd gen basher when I am far from, have many positive posts too but you choose to ignore those apparently. You're a hypocrite as well, saying you handed an olive branch and no issues or I'm too sensitive but here you are stirring the pot with mods and acting in the wrong assuming and slandering me. Dude you need to step back and reassess and actually read the whole discussion before you start pointing fingers and running your mouth. This is starting to get old and ridiculous.

Now you're being a troll and ridiculous. Let me know and others when you actually have SOMETHING to contribute to a thread/conversation. Not trying to bash dude but you need to stop or I will be reaching out to a mod, there's an ignore feature if I bother you that much just ignore me.

Seems to be just your opinion as you chase me and comment from thread to thread without even reading the thread, assuming and slandering, not cool dude. I apologize you feel attacked about your truck, but like you are entitled to your opinion, so am I, in this thread I simply stated what wasn't fact or skewed comments in helping OP with his decision, feel free to add your opinion too but stop bashing me and making it some crazy personal agenda, just makes you look bad. Again there is an ignore feature, use it.
