Just because they own stock doesn't mean they have the same company practices.

Technically Fuji heavy industries which makes Subaru. Hence the Toyota forklifts.

Have you seen the FRS/BRZ/Toyota 86? It’s running the NA FA20 directly from the WRX and the only reason it’s not turbo’s is because Toyota said NO!

That may be the case for an individual car that Subaru and Toyota had a partnership on. But my point is that that just because toyota owns 17% of Subaru, it doesn't mean Subaru will be as reliable is Toyota. Toyota isn't dictating engineering, design, and reliability practices for a wrx.

I have a 2015 GTI, it’s got 60k, no issues. A lot more grown up and comfortable than a WRX.

    I say go with both!

At the end of the day, both have their place for me. Truck can carry things and get me to places in the mountains the WRX cant. The WRX is far better in the shallow snow (and even better with snow tires). The WRX is more fun to drive until I get stuck in traffic, heavy snow or more than a gravel road. The truck is more fun when off road, camping and hauling stuffs around.

I conversely traded my 2019 WRX for the 2019 Tacoma as shown. Mainly because I wrecked it with a deer collision..and I usually don't drive cars which have had substantial body damage (even if repaired). My WRX was awesome. Super fun to drive and nary a problem even at 10K miles. Not a drop of oil consumption, either. What I like about the WRX over the Golf R is the sunroof and the viscous center diff over the clutch-based, part-time RWD with a FWD bias. Be aware, tho: The WRX is very weak off the line unless you slip the clutch a bit. Otherwise, HOLD ON!

Overall, I'm not super happy with my Gen 3 Taco TRD Sport. Possibly because I could not get a manual with the TRD/OR package with the Access cab. It actually handles rough trails suprisingly well for a "Sport" and has nice amenities...but is otherwise a boring DD. Not real fast under 3K rpm and bounces like a ball down the road. So, I managed to find a CPO BMW M240i for daily driving chores. Not AWD like the WRX/STI, but plenty peppy and cheaper/softer than the BMW M2.

I've been scouring the internet for a Gen 1 Tacoma TRD/OR with low miles, but they all seem to be on lemon lots in the far NE part of the country. So, I'll wait for one closer by and upgrade the rubber bits with urethane once I find that Gen 1 Taco unicorn.

My advice is to get what you need. The Taco allows you to have fun hobbies like camping, off-roading, hauling bikes, etc. However, the WRX can do many of that with 50% better MPGs and is a LOOOOOOT more fun.

I'd buy a used Tacoma. No turbo.

I used to own a 2007 STi before I got into off-roading. Apparently a difference in tire diameters chews up the viscous coupling in the diffs in a Subaru. Very expensive to fix from what I hear.

Don’t get me wrong, the STI was a fun car to drive, but it also went through 2 sets of exhaust valves and a turbo in the time I owned it. Cost me $$$ to say the least.

OP - The STI I had was crazy fast and would scream past just about anything on the road except a gas station hahaha. I think you’d be better served by going a different route if you have concerns about reliability and gas mileage.

As somebody who lives in PDX, I can say that you’re probably better off avoiding the dog moms and their Subaru’s lol.

2007 is almost ancient history in the world of turbo car technology. With the new DIT 2.0L engines of the latest gen WRXs, most (if not all) of the bugs have been worked out. Plus, was your car bought new or used? Modded or not?

New 2007 STi. No true mods to speak of aside from a Cobb Accessport. Did that mostly to avoid issues with the motor running lean.

I’ve always wondered how the new 2.0 motors perform with DIT. An old coworker of mine had one and it was a bit too new at the time to really see any major issues.

Dog and cat moms are too high maintenance, stay away from them.

Date a nice girl that owns/owned a Toyota truck with real hub locks, that’s what I did and you will not regret it!

I looked at a WRX prior to buying my Tacoma. I couldn't get over the WRX's cheap interior and Subaru had a class-action lawsuit filed against them for engine failure at the time. Each has their pros and cons. Buy/keep the one that fits your lifestyle. It may be an easy choice if your Subaru dealer won't give you a good deal.
