Having just done this, if you use duplicolor the stated coverage is not even close. I doubled what I thought I needed and it still was not enough for the blue when doing my roof.

I used 6 cans for just the hood.

Buy more than you think. Better to have a few extra cans than run out in the middle of doing it, also the can will not pick up all of the paint when spraying on a flat surface. There is probably 1/4 of the paint left when this happens and test the damn nozzle before spraying on the truck. I had a few defective nozzles that either shot back at me or just sprayed blobs of paint, pull a good nozzle from another can to keep going.

I had the same issue with my roof. Was an idiot and put canoes and kayaks up there with moving blankets to protect roof but eventually damage paint and because I park outside mine ended up looking like yours over time. I just had shop do it and it looks like new again. Cost me $650. Don’t have before pics but was worse than yours imo. Happy with results for the $$$. How do I post a pic? I’m new to TW. Haha.

Mine looked the same as yours OP. Even after waxing the whole truck including the roof 4-5 times a year.

Shops where I was living were 1200-1500 to paint. Where I’m located now I could probably have done better but....

Lots of sanding and prep, 2 cans Spraymax 2K epoxy primer, 2 cans base coat in black sand pearl, and 2 cans of Spraymax 2K clear It’s looking good and not peeling or rusting. Cost around $150 for everything.

Make damn sure you use a good respirator If you spray this stuff.

spray it satin black and who cares.. the black roof will not look bad, get a rack later and use it like a truck not a sports car.

OP, how did this end up working out? I literally have the same issue with my identically-colored Taco.

I ended up saving and had the hood and the roof professionally painted.

I know this is an old thread, but I had major paint peeling along the 1st few inches of my hood but nowhere else. Seems to be common with white. It was at the time a 14 year old truck with high miles on it and I didn't want to spend $4K to have the whole truck painted. I taped off 6" of my hood, sanded it good and sprayed it with white FlexSeal.

The color doesn't match, and the FlexSeal is textured. I made no attempt to worry about matching. It sort'a looks like the textured paint they use along the lower edges of the body.

That was 3 years ago and it is holding up just fine. And I don't think it looks bad at all. Especially for about $20 vs $4000.

I'd do it again to the roof or anywhere else with bad paint. I highly recommend the FlexSeal even though they only make it in black or white. If I didn't have a black or white truck I'd just 2-tone it.

Has anyone seen the new TikTok’s going around with the product that claims to address this by simply wiping it on

im gonna try to figure out what it is

supposedly there was an original source of a guy who came up with a formula

then all of a sudden a horde of Chinese accounts using AI voice generator came through speaking very oddly scripted lines, probably stole the formula and trying to sell it

which if so, former source > latter

I mean the site seems to also sell “wipe on clear”. Idk if they’re the same originator that was on TikTok that might be cheaper
Unless they just copied it and used TikTok for paid promotion to the masses

either way this pic from above link shows Corolla “Before” basically doing what my truck is on top

    IMG_2148.jpg

looks expensive but still way cheaper than paintwork.

wish I knew about this concept (if it really works) before I adjusted and bolted on a roof rack blocking access…

    I THINK this is it…video looks familiar…

    “shiny car stuff”
    $30 apparently
Much cheaper than the $200 other one

Curious to see if anyone else beats me to being the first ginuea pig

don’t think I have anything to lose with the current fade.
    IMG_2149.jpg

Maybe I’ll get it. Use it on the hood and upper shoulders of the cab and fenders. Then store the bottle fingers crossed it won’t leak out. To use later on the roof if I take the rack back off to do it.

probably right after a wash and claybar.

    IMG_2150.jpg

I hope this actually is what it says it is. A wipe on clear coat. One comment said it cures in 48hr.

    and hopefully not…WD40 in a bottle…

guess there’s only one way to find out.
    On the plus side
It’s marketed as wipe on clear coat. So, if it ends up being WD40, might be possible to call the bank and dispute the $30 charge under Promised Goods Not Delivered in the chance they mail you Ketchup.

Worst case scenario if it doesn’t last forever at least it looks good in the videos compared to what I did.
No matter how much sealant or wax I slapped onto my truck, it didn’t hide it. And doesn’t last long.

Ever since Toyota went with an "environmentally friendly" paint system, it just doesn't hold up to the sun. Your best bet is to garage your car, otherwise the sun will kill the clear coat just like you see in this thread.

My 94 Toyota truck's clear coat looked pretty darn good after 14 years when it was killed by a semi in 2008. My 2008 Tacoma started looking like this (minus the rust) after 10-12 years, and that's with me doing the exact same polish and wax procedures as I did on my 94 Toyota. IIWII.
