Should I wait for the 2016?

I currently own a gmc sierra 1500 slt 2013. I am considering trading it in for a 2015 4x4 DC Tacoma. My question is should I wait for the 2016 model? I had a 98 Tacoma and miss it badly but my wife is concerned that a midsize truck might not work well with a family. Just curious peoples thoughts.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Get the 2016, the double cab will have plenty of room for hauling people. I can haul people comfortably in my 2004 first gen double cab so if it can surely a bigger midsize truck can.

I'm on the fence as well. I love the 15s but like the features and look of the 16. I have a good vibe for the new engine, would love having the 6 speed, more power?, and other potential amenities would be nice.
I just have a feeling if I get a 15 then a few months later see the 16 and get the specs on it I may be kicking myself for jumping the gun too early.
On the other hand the 16s could such but then I wouldn't be able to find a new 15.

Tough call. Depends on if the new features of the 2016 matter to you or not - sunroof, better gas mileage, locking tailgate. . . I love my 2014 and don't regret buying it - I knew the 2016 was right around the corner.

Gotta test them all. Drive the new Canyon, paying close attention to the interior fit and finish. Then go drive a 2015 Tacoma. Then an Ecoboost Ford. Then a Dodge Ram. I found the Tacoma to be the best built of the lot, with the Ford a close second.

My brother has an F-150, but likes the Tacoma as well. I like driving his truck, but it doesn't navigate Austin like the Taco.

Honestly, though, if you're not having trouble with the Sierra, I'd wait a year or two.

Tough call as most have said. I'm chomping at the bit for a 2016 just because I know myself and if I go out today and buy a '15 as soon as I see the first '16 on the road I'm going to have buyers remorse. For myself again as mentioned previously, the (potentially) better mpg and the sunroof are reasons to wait. I did also test drive a GMC Canyon as I'm coming from a 2013 Terrain and just didn't like almost everything about it compared to the Tacoma. Then there is the other side of the coin and no way of knowing how many if any problems they will have with the new model in the first few years.

Since you're asking the question I'm going to go with the assumption you don't find the '16's styling repulsive like a certain percentage of 2nd Gen owners that post here do.

That said, the way I see it you'd be silly not to wait for the '16 to come out & then decide. In my estimation the up side to waiting is way more than any downside factors.

Things like nicer/quieter interior, more mpg, more HP, strengthened frame, 6-speed trans, driveline improvement to eliminate low speed shimmy, etc. Even if some of these turn out to be Toyota embellishments you're likely to still be ahead in regard to having a more modern / refined vehicle in the '16.

If you drive a '16 & it's not for you then you still have the option of buying a '14 or '15 one way or another.

I am in the same boat as you, I have the cash in the Bank ready to go but I am going to wait for the 2016 to come out, the added creature comforts and the "increased gas mileage" have my interest, if I look at it and don't like it I will just buy a 2014 or 2015 and save some dough...

Going with a Double Cab for sure, just not decided on the SB or LB at this point in time but leaning towards the LB...

I'm getting a 2015. The 2nd generations are great trucks. My 2009 Tacoma was the best truck I have ever owned. I wish I still had it. Just learned my lesson the hard way buying a new model year Canyon. Nothing but troubles. If I really like the new Tacoma's, I can always get one in a couple of years. JMHO

People have been asking this same question for all the five years I've been on TW. With the new truck announced and to be available this fall, and it already June - the answer might finally be something other than an unequivocal "no."

You might want to wait for the new 2016 truck if:

    You're MPG sensitive
You're going to trade it in or sell it within five years (concerned about maximum resale value in the short term)
You like the styling/features of the new model

You might want the existing truck if:
You plan to modify the suspension right away (e.g. lift it)
You plan to keep it a long time
You're price sensitive and you'd rather pay a lower up front cost (but make sure you negotiate aggressively with the dealer and get a price well below sticker)

I want the '16 but seeing all kinds of lease deals on the '15's now which makes waiting even harder to do. I plan on keeping whatever I get until the wheels fall off but thinking of going with a lease on a '16 just in case there are a crap load of problems with it. If not, in 3 years I'll just buy my own used truck. If there are then I trade it for a '19 or '20

Since GM is rolling out the new Colorado/Canyon, Toyota can't be complacent anymore. Toyota sold Tacoma's with almost no competition and without the need to give any sort of incentives. Now that GM has a dog in the fight again, Toyota might give better incentives to move the 2016's. I would wait to see what Toyota will offer with regards to discounted pricing. It might be worth it to go for a 2016 with more options and better MPG as opposed to a 2015 with less Toys.

IMO. If you go for 2015 model, you might as well get a 2014 or 2013 with 20,000 miles on it. You will save lots more $$ and is still the exact same as a 2015. already broken in for you and still lots of warranty left.

    BAD IDEA...DON'T DO IT.

My wife once owned a 2010 Lexus RX350. We loved the vehicle so when it was time for me to get a new vehicle we got another Lexus. Since I put on too many miles (18000-20000 miles/year) it made sense to get a efficient vehicle. We got a new Lexus RX450h (hybrid). Who else didn't like 32/28/30 (city/Hway/combined) MPG when gas was between $4-$5 per gallon. 18 months later I sold the 450h with 33000 miles for $3k loss. I got bored of having 2 almost exactly the same vehicles.

I do NOT ever again own 2 "similar" vehicles.

Couple of thoughts after reading through the comments. 1. The "lots of problems with a new model in the first year" can basically be thrown out the window when your talking about a Toyota. Go back through history, I don't think you will find one example of this. Is Toyota perfect? Hell no, but better then the other manufacturers by far. History will show you that Toyota doesn't care about being first to market, they care about QDR from the first model to the last (anybody get a 10k frame job on a truck out of warranty). Toyota, unlike other manufacturers, historically will not bring a product to market, until they have the bugs worked out. Example: 12 Camry, 13 Rav, 14 Highlander, 14 Corolla.
    2. You will not see any incentives on the 16's and incentives on the 15's will be minimal or none. For the 15's, Toyota national production still equals demand. Still outselling Canyon/Colorado 2-1 and Frontier 3-1. No need to incentivize, lease and purchase in Pa still at standard rates. 15 inventory will be mostly dried up by the time the 16's hit the ground in sept/oct. So, deals on 15's will most likely not have any factory incentives. The 16's will be hot sellers from the jump, 10 years without a change will have lots of people on lists to buy a redesigned truck. I would bet it will be 6 months minimum before you can go to the dealer and see more then 1 truck that is available, unless you start following the delivery trucks and most of those will already be sold.
    3. You will get a better deal on a 15 now compared to a 16 in 6 months. Dealers will discount a 15, 16's will be sold at sticker for at least a couple of months.

You have got to be kidding! "Almost everything is better in the 2nd Gen Tacoma"? Really it's just the opposite just about everything is better on the Canyon. I won't even bother to list all the things the Canyon has that the 2nd Tacoma doesn't, but its a long list.
