looking to get a 4x4 truck. i currently have a 2010 tacoma dbl cab 4x2

thinking about trading it in for a 4x4. also thinking about getting the tacoma's big brother the tundra dbl cab 4x4.

    any input on this?

should i pull the trigger there is a 4,500 incentive for the tundra double cab. i still owe 14,000 on my tacoma. probably drive out the tundra... id say 33,000

Lifted Tundra is a monster... way too big for trails meant for Jeeps and Tacomas. Why do you want 4x4? If its for trails you will not be happy.

Had a Tundra. Trading it in was one of the stupidest moves I ever made

i want 4x4 for occasional off roading. not trails or anything. beach and sand dune driving mainly. some mudding... maybe not that hardcore cause i hear cleaning the engine bay is a pain.

and i was just thinking if i was going to trade in to get a new 4x4 might as well get a tundra and i like the double cab look. i never haul anyone around. i do alot of mountain biking and kayaking so the 6.5 foot bed would be nice to have.

There's only a 5 inch difference between the 73" Taco bed and the 78" Tundra bed. EDIT: There is a significant difference between the 60" if you have the DCSB, which after re-reading your post you probably do.

Also, have you tried off roading in your Tacoma? Or are you just making the 4x4 judgement off of what you've heard?

From what you're saying; you want a double cab but don't carry a lot of people, you want 4x4 for 'occasional' off roading not including trailing, and you would like to have that extra 5 inches of space in the bed for bikes and a kayak. (EDIT: Unless you have the SB, then it is a significant increase)

I would just get a bed extender and/or a roof rack, nice tires and maybe even a lift. It'll be a whole lot cheaper and you won't loose as much gas mileage if it's your DD vs the Tundra as a DD.

yea i fish alot. wish i could afford a boat, but instead i use my kayak.

i should have put my trucks specs my bad:
DCSB, TRD Off Road, 4x2, v6

i did think about putting a lift and getting some good tires, but i though if i do trade it in, in the future id lose the money i put into the lift.

i currently pay 369 for my tacoma. if i trade it in and get the tundra DC i would pay aprox 430-450. BUT id be starting a whole new 60 month payment plan... and i have 14,000 left on my taco.

got a new job... my ONLY monthly payments are my truck, gas, insurance, and food. no kids.
EDIT: I do not commute to my job, i get a department crown vic. (with red and blues on top)

I had to get rid of my Tundra because of a divorce. I had a dbl cab 5.7 4x4. Great truck. I miss it. And it got the same mileage as both my Tacomas. But this 6 speed Tacoma is nice also just not as big inside.

Also, a 4x4 is the only way to go. Just my opinion based on weather conditions, beach driving, etc... Point being you don't have to be a hardcore wheeler to need a 4x4.

My son in law just got a 4x4 Dbl cab tundra and he gets 13mpg on a good day. I used to have a 2005 Tundra V6, but they don't make those in 4x4. If gas mileage matters at all, stick with the Tacoma.

Gas mileage, insurance increase, bigger loan payments, etc are all things to consider and imho one of the main reasons many of us don't drive full sized trucks to begin with. If expenses and not needing the money for other things (even savings) isn't important and you need and can use the truck for other reasons, than go for it. Otherwise think wisely about it, we always 'want' things but not always need them...you can always upgrade later.

I just traded in my Crewmax Tundra 5.7 4x4 on 35s and was getting 11 to 12 miles per gallon as a DD. I absolutely loved my tundra but had to trade it in I got a 12 Tacoma and it is alright but not a Tundra anyways my insurance went down 20 dollars a month with the tacoma. If I were you I would keep the tacoma and put a little work into it I think in the long run you will be happier.

stick with what you have, the locker you already have will help a lot. But if you want a 4x4, maybe look into a tacoma thats a couple years older than yours thats 4x4.

From your description, sound like you don't need a Tundra. As for 4x4, thats your call and if its worth trading in. At least you have a locker.

I have a DCSB and I just recently got OEM bed extender and it is one of the best "upgrades" I got. I just zip-tied 1-1/4 inch foam pipe insulation from Home Depot to the top tube of the extender and I lay my kayaks on top overhanging the truck. Me and my friends all have 10 foot kayaks and this is the easiest, fastest and cheapest option to transport them I found.

First off I would say put your 2010 up for sale; Tacoma hold their values quite well you'll get more for it.
Two why do you want a 4X4? answer that question your truck is fairly new?
    Just sayin

Sounds like want a Tundra. Most cops I know can afford a few toys, so you might as well go for it. Better investment than a boat anyway. And I prefer fishing from a kayak anyway.
How many miles will you do in a year?

It sounds like you could just keep your truck because if your going to do a little off roading you will make it pretty much everywhere in 2 wheel drive unless you start getting into deep snow or lots of mud trust me from experience haha

I avg the same mpg in my tundra 4x4 as my tacoma as DD.
Moving up from a prerunner you will see a change though
Also my insurance went down $50 going from the taco to the 2011.
    I didn't understand it.
The incentives you are getting ~ $4500 is huge depending on what you buy.
My 11 4x4 DC was $27500. It was not a TRD. The incentive was only $2500
but I used the USAA buying program & I traded my 06 Tacoma in that I owned. Cost me $10k to flip.
Love the truck & the room.

x2. take your money and buy a boat instead. thats what i would do at least. It sounds like the tundra may be a little too much truck for your needs
