I think your asking me - just the roof and hood, DCSB. Those 2 panels seem to be the common ones that have this issue, and no others, for some reason. The pic is another TW members and is a lot worse than mine. I want to get it fixed before it gets to this point.

Roof on mine is bad. Also interesting is the driver side tiptop window sill where you test your arm and the top of my flares is also peeling but not my passenger side.

I was quoted $600 to do just the roof matte black. I’ll pull the trigger on it soon but may see what it would cost to do more.

I'm bracing myself for several thousand dollars to redo it with the black sand pearl, which seems crazy.

@916carl I would guess for both the roof and hood, $1200 to $2000. get estimates, and good prep, paint, and finish work are worth it unless you want it to peel off again in a few years.

Got my first quote today - $1800 roof and hood, $200 for top coat repair rear fender flare = $2000, but $1800 if I pay cash. I had planned on getting 2 more estimates today but when I went into Caliber Collision they wouldn't do an estimate from a walk in; have to make an appointment. At that point I was done, I had done a bunch of other errands and had to get back. So tomorrow I'll go by the other places.

Stopped by a couple paint shops here in SD for shits & giggles. I had bought a new pro grille and wanted to see what they would charge to paint match it. $700!

I hit up https://www.paintscratch.com/ and bought a paint package and didn't myself for $100.

I'm not saying do it yourself, I'm just saying shop around till you find the sweetest offer :)

I've seen videos on youtube showing the steps of DIY for a Taco and thought about it. I just don't have time or space. Tiny 1 car garage that won't even fit the truck. I'd have to rig up some kind of tent in the driveway. Plenty of body shops around, so I'm going to hit up 3 tomorrow that are within a mile or so of each other.

The shop today had a Taco with the same issue being painted and a Toyota Sienna waiting for same. Apparently it's not limited to Tacos or black sand pearl. He said he has a steady stream coming through.

Right on. Keep looking! I redid my hood, roof and from fender flares for around $1100. The place I had it done at unfortunately went out of business after covid.

Well in my opinion, I believe those problem areas turned out like that is 1. The weak clear coat Toyota applied. 2. Someone washed thier Toyota with dish soap (which has detergent and deteriorates the clear coat). And finally #3. This leaves those spots exposed and vulnerable to UV rays. Perfect recipe for paint damage.

Hi all, I'm new to the forums, but getting some great info out of it. I bought my 2015 Tacoma TRD from within the family and loving it. I'm in the process of swapping the front grille surround and rear bumper to black from the factory chrome. Will probably swap step bars, and would love some black rims eventually. So many fun mini-mods on these trucks are a fun way to kill time in the garage as the kids play outside.

@SplittingFives Welcome! Very nice truck to start with! I put Fuel Revolvers on mine just recently, and totally dig 'em.

One of my friend drive a 2007, when my last vehicule died last December, he convinced me to buy a Tacoma, after 4 month of research and saving money, i got this nice trail team TRD sport 2012, 136 000 miles on the clock and drive like new. All new fluid, tyre, wheel, rear leaf and front diff bushing. Waiting for Elka to build the rear shock to replace the oem one and i will do a complete refresh for the front suspension next summer. No problem with the black paint for now !

So did you end up making it to those other places for quotes? I have sort of the same deal going on with my BSP where the roof is starting to go and the hood is probably only a matter of time as well. If you can, keep us posted with updates.

Also, you mentioned top coat repair for the rear fender flares. Are you talking about them applying a new top coat followed by a clear coat? Talking to a auto body place a couple years ago they mentioned that trying to repaint the front bumper and fender flares is tricky since they're textured surfaces. So if they're sanding down the surfaces for repaint the texture could/will be removed which would alter the finished appearance of the paint compared to how it looked originally.

I got 4 quotes, with Caliber being outrageously high - more than double the next highest estimate. I'm going with one in the middle, as they did some work on my Camaro and they will only have the truck for 4-5 days. It'll be a bit over $1800. The least expensive wants my truck for several weeks. Nope.

Typo when I said top coat. The clear coat started to peal and they are going to do that. I was told the flare is textured but it appears someone repainted it in the past. So I'm just having the clear coat redone.

For anyone who wants to know, quotes ranged between $1800 - $2000 with one being $4500, and that's hood and roof repaint with one fender flare clear coat repair.

Thanks for the update. Outside the insane $4500 & several weeks quote that's sort of ballpark what I was thinking it'd run.

Your fender flare deal might be separate from this, but it seems the earlier 2nd gens had numerous issues/complaints from folks about the flares having a dull finish compared to the rest of the truck. There was a TSB (BO003-05) addressing this early on where I think Toyota recommended the flare's clear coat to be redone. Being the original owner of my 08 I wish I was aware of this back then as I would've at least brought it to my dealer's attention since mine have this same dull finish issue as well.
