A Softopper, TopperTent and Springbar Auto Canopy (not longer made, sadly) work pretty well together. I used this setup on another trip in rainy conditions and stayed warm and dry.

How do you like the clam shell? Are they as easy to set up and tear down as they look? I'm not interested in the side rooms etc. and just want something simple.

Here's mine. Nothing special by any means. Hoping to be able to give it a big revamp it inside and out in the next year or so. Going to need to go use this configuration a few more times to see what doesn't work now and what will work better in the future. Got a few ideas percolating now.

The trailer is a Northstar 4x6 atv trailer. I wanted something light that I could also tow with my 66' CJ5, but also strong enough to withstrand harsh washboard and rocky terrain. Heavy gauge "C" channel that is fully welded from the factory. It's much stronger then a harbor Freight or Lowes trailer. So....that's what I started with. Now....to make it stronger and be able to accomodate my needs I've done the following. 1) Removed the ramp and the mesh flooring. 2) Replaced with 3/4" plywood. 3) Replaced the tongue with .125'x3" tubing, running all the way back under the frame. 4) Using a Lock & Roll hitch setup. 5) Standard 12v RV battery. 6) Suspension replaced with 3500lb axle, and longer smooth ride springs. 6) added the rack, spare tire holder, bigger fenders, stabilizers, and LED backup lights. Barebones without the tent it weighs approx 480lbs. Tent weighs 135lbs, and with my other gear that I take...it comes in at less than 800lbs. I chose this size also because of it's wider track...less chances of it tipping when I hit a rock or miss a bump. I kept the tongue short so it tracks behind my vehicles nicely. With the tent off, it also makes for my kayak carrier. I just wanted a simple, light weight, versatile trailer to get me off the ground and allow me to carry more "stuff". The tent is mounted so it opens at the rear. My thinking with that is I don't have to be picky about how I need to park it when I get to camp...requires less space. The same goes for the table that attaches to either side. But the best part for me was keeping the tent mounted low enough that I don't have to climb all over it to set it up or take it down. It also has the same hub pattern as my jeep, so I don't carry the spare when I'm using that vehicle.

The Topper Tent wins out for me. I like how it is always ready to deploy, and does so fairly quickly and handily. I really liked the extra spaciousness of the DAC tent but if all I am doing is tucking away for some well sheltered sleep and rolling out when I wake, the Topper Tent gets it done.

How quick does the Topper Tent setup for you? I've never tried one. I find the DAC can be set up in 2 mins and taken down even quicker. Of course when you take it down it's a jumbled mess so you have to take time to store it back in the bag I suppose.
