Biggest thing was the money invested.
If i would have kept it a tune would have got done immediately. To me, it doesn't feel like it pulls like the 4.0's. I had a 2nd. gen 4.0 with a M/T for a small time once, personally i would pick that motor trans. combo over the 3.5 with a manual anyday. I may would change my mind after the tune but stock i wouldn't.

There is nothing "wrong" with a 3rd gen Tacoma. They just should have forfeited some mpg for a better tuned engine. The Atkinson cycle engine would be ok in a Camry or Sienna. It just was a bad tune for a truck in my opinion. I didn't have transmission "problems" but I never liked that, when in Drive, it would find 6th gear running 38 mph. Nearly every time I drove it in town I switched to ECT mode which changed the shift points and rpm's. As stated by @cwtoy the 4.0 has more low end torque at the cost of a couple of mpg. My biggest issue, having driven only 25k miles in 5.5 years, was knowing I had all that money tied up in something I rarely drove and wasn't extremely happy to drive. My 2013 Ford Escape turbo (stop laughing) is way more responsive and fun to drive. That is very sad to me. So the 2nd gen hunt is on. I have a pyrite mica lined up once the guy gets the title back from the bank. Stoked going from a 2016 with 25k miles to a 2012 with over 100k miles. That in itself is a statement.

When I found mine I was the first caller when the ad came out on my local craigslist so I was very fortunate. Been waiting nearly 2 weeks for him to get his lien free title from the bank but worth the wait.

Hello. I'm new to the forum but have read plenty of TW posts. I ran across this cool thread and decided to contribute. This is my 2011. Fresh detail, 265/70R16 tires and painted wheels.

Finally took possession of my 2012 PM Access Cab SR5 rear wheel drive. It has 144k miles on it. Ran good but needs attention. First thing was spark plugs. I believe the oem plugs were in it. The 0.042" gap measured 0.075" on them and it ran good but lacked power. Then a serpentine which wasn't in bad shape. Next was front brakes that I believe were the oem pads. Completely shot. Made a front license plate bracket. Replaced clogged up cabin air filter. Made and installed 1" seat spacers under rear of driver seat and 3/4" under rear of passenger seat. Now seats feel much better. Bought new hoses, new Toyota coolant, crc cleaned maf, bought throttle body cleaner, changed pcv, changed air filter, bought new brake fluid, 4 quarts of 75/90 differential oil, Clazzio seat covers, black nerf bars, ventvisors, replaced passenger headlight (had new driver and yellowed pass light), bought a spare excellent used set of headlights for possible black headlight mod and a bag of flare clips to re-clip one of the fender flares. Debating between Spiker and RedLine hood struts (a must have). Going to pay the dealer to do a complete 13 qt transmission flush. For now my next step is brake, coolant, power steering and differential drain/flush/fill. Hoping that within a week I can move on to tires and wheels (probably either 3rd gen Tacoma or 4runner 17 inch take-offs). Got to get rid of the 265/70-16 Pathfinder AT tires (very rough riding) on the steelies. Going to be a chore getting this up to date on all the maintenance but still happy to have it. Depending on tires I may do a Bilstein 5100 level on it. The only thing I am really debating is whether to keep the chrome SR5 grille or spend $195 for a PM painted Sport grille. I really like the painted grille surrounds on this color. Hopefully in around 10 days or so I will post as-bought vs current comparison pictures. I did reserve another plate, with "12 SR5" but for now just rocking my old "16 TRD" plates as they are paid for thru Sept 2022. Watch for updates.

Got my grille in today, they forgot to send me the lights. Got my lift, hopefully by the end of next week it will be on. I ended up selling my camper top, hope XMYTaco is enjoying it! Nothing out of the ordinary on my mods but hopefully wheels will be added soon also.

Like the grille. I am anxious to dump the chrome surround on mine. I have been photoshopping different wheels on mine. Really like the look of the gray trd PTR20-35110-GR wheels on this color. Haven't photoshopped the bronze yet. Then again any black wheels seem to look good and I am installing black nerf bars tomorrow or Saturday. Not sure if I want to spend too much on wheels. I had BFG KO2 tires on my 16 but not putting AT's on this one. It is rear wheel drive. Doing more of a budget build on my 2012. My biggest regret is not buying a new 2015 PM. I saw the 2016 and loved the new look so I waited a few months and bought a new 2016. Was planning on 5100's to level but now am considering staying stock height with a 265/75-16 tire. It is fun starting over with another virgin truck.

I really like those wheels also, i may lean towards the gray ones with the gloss finish but will be one of the two in the end.
Had tossed around the idea of blacking out what few chrome emblems are on the truck but for now i'm going to leave them alone.

I emailed about a set of 5 freshly powder coated 4runner 16 inch wheels ET15 that I am awaiting a reply. I am going to photoshop these to see how they look. Might be a good look. Will see.

Not the best photoshop but rough idea. I like the wheels. Improvement over steelies.
