I wrestled with the decision of adding a tune to my 3rd gen. I know that does make a huge difference in performance but I was worried about the long term ramifications on the engine and transmission. I personally think the better move for Toyota would have been to take the existing 2nd gen powertrain and update it with an extra overdrive gear. That would have provided the required mpg numbers to satisfy the epa while still having the low end torque. My son now has nearly 150k on the 2012 and it still performs better than my 3rd gen ever did. I think you are wise in your decision and you can always reverse that decision in a few months. I am still hopeful that Toyota changes the powertrain in a future model. It is a shame that a new Ranger 4 banger has better power (seat feel and shifting) than a new V6 Tacoma. I drove one but wouldn't buy one. Best of luck to you. For the price difference in selling yours and buying new you can take a fraction of the savings and pour a new parking pad in your limited space at your new place.

I would love to do this in mine.

I spent over a grand on repairs on mine in 2020. Most of it was either standard maintenance or replacing items that were replaced with non-OEM components. (i.e. both lower control arms were replaced with Dorman a few years back. I forked out the money and replaced those with OEM since the Dorman had a 12 month service life on the LBJ). The only "non standard" maintenance that I had to do was the wires and harness for the HVAC fan motor, which I learned is fairly common to need to be replaced. The only part that I can recall replacing with non-OEM is the UCAs. I went with BDS for those. I put less than 7k miles on the truck in 2020 since I worked from home most of the year.

The only part that I purchased that hasn't been replaced yet is the EVAP canister. Mine typically throws a code in cold weather, but it hasn't done that this year.

Not sure I want to fork out for leather with all the other expenses last year.

Look at Clazzio.com. I have had these covers in my last 3 Tacomas. Look like factory installed leather. Had their black leather in one truck and put their gray PVC in 2 trucks. Look the same.20211020_163259.jpg 20210803_150834.jpg 20210526_142818.jpg

I've looked at them, and @synaps3 has them and highly recommends. I got to see them when I went wheeling with him once. For the cost, you're 2/3 to the real leather Katzkin seats.

Having access cabs they have been very inexpensive. Leather in my 2016 was $274 in 2016. The PVC in my 2012 and 2008 were around $230 per truck a few months ago. I like that I can install them in 1.5 hours without removing the seats. Katzkins are nice but are labor intensive.

I looked yesterday and they were showing $600 for the double cab. There's a member on the forum that sells the katzkin kit for (IIRC) $850.

With the 10% coupon Clazzio are $360 for PVC or $550 for leather double cabs with Sport seats. I am by no means knocking Katzkins because they are great seat skins. If you plan on doing yourself then the Katzkins are fair priced. If you are paying for labor for the installation, usually several hundred $$, then Clazzio are a better option. I had the leather in my 16 for over 5 years and you could not tell they were covers. They fit like a glove and had zero wear on them. I went with the PVC on the 2nd gens because the 16 leathers had PVC bolsters and they wore as good as the leather. What I liked about the Clazzios was that I could remove them and still have the immaculate factory cloth seats. Like I said they worked well for me since I drive access cabs. One thing I won't buy again is CoverKing. I spent over $500 for my wifes new 2016 SUV. Looked great. After 3 months they started stretching and within 6 months, after a few adjustments, the bunjee straps started snapping off. Total waste of money.

I may consider them. I picked up some WetOkole seat covers on Craiglist several years ago. They have been great, but I miss leather. The drivers side is starting to wear out also. I may just switch which seat they are installed on.

A couple from last year. Will get some new pics once the new wheels go on this spring. This colour wasn't my first choice but it has really grown on me.

Funny. Pyrite Mica was my only choice when I bought mine new in 2014. Nearest dealer to me that had one was 5 hours away. So I went and got it.

I had to special order mine.

I was between Pyrite Mica, Timberland Mica and Barcelona Red. Too many Super White, Black, Magnetic Grey, and Silver trucks around. I really wanted the old midnight blue, but they had replaced that with Speedway Blue and there was no way that was gonna happen.

I think we'd all agree that we'd like to have seen the Pyrite Mica color on a 3rd gen. Well, now you can!....sort of.

    https://www.extremeterrain.com/taco...BlWlpldODuMz239hQ3xoCROAQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I was googling bed racks and Extreme Terrain had one listed for fairly cheap by comparison to the name brands. It asked a bunch of questions about my truck, including the color, and updated the image that the rack was shown on....despite it being a 3rd gen in the image. I thought it was pretty cool and figured I'd share here. Several angles, but here is just one:

As much as I love Pyrite Mica it would be a waste of a great color on a 3rd gen. I had a 3rd gen for 5.5 years. I can state factually that the 3rd gen is not worthy of the color. If that color was available for 3rd gens I most certainly would have bought it. My 3rd gen was blue and it was a pretty truck but the color is not why I sold it. My biggest regret was not searching harder, and further from home, for a remaining new 2015 Pyrite Mica Taco. Maybe Pyrite Mica for an improved 4th gen Taco.#bringbackthe4.0

5th gen 4runner in Pyrite Mica would be pretty cool to see as well. Plus, still has the 4.0...granted it is not quite the same as the 2nd gen, but close.
