Would be great if there was some way for it to be on a spring too, so that thing isn't hanging down to whack you in the head.

Ooh. maybe that was my problem, I tried for six months, gave up, paid out the ass ($2,400) for new. :D

I looked at the eye nuts. The issue with those is they are expensive as you mentioned, and they protrude over an inch into the cargo space in the cab. That may interfere with cargo loading and could hurt someone's head.

To fix any potential rattling of d-ring, put into bench vice apply tension to slightly deform the hinge. A hammer will work too.

I like the clean look of no rack, I would also never use it. I can fit everything I use inside the tuck...

I like the topper with a rack. I need it also. Kanoes, kayaks, construction material.be694520b3ecfc692118a1ff0a3286dd_bab118b7933abc85c6999acd6bf7c7c31634ccf5.jpg

Some lift, some armor, some scratches..
This is exactly what I did, except without those nifty black rings. Strung thin airplane wire from eye to eye and crimped them off. I also slid a small pool noodle/ foam tube over the wire and cut out little notches for where the I wanted the fishing rods to sit.

    Works great.

Not a bad idea.. Could easily add a spring to the wire end (both sides?) and it would hug the roof better. Fwiw mine doesn't seem to bother me much with how it hangs

The way I did mine was to take a piece of blue painters tape and do a strip down the center from the shells brake light to the truck cabs brake light and find your center on the exterior top of the shell. Then make your measurements from there. I would not recommend drilling through the reinforced part you want your racks feet as close to the edge without being on the round part. you want it close to the vertical wall so the load is distributed over the bed rail and the strongest part of the shell. I just used bolts through the track with a large fender washer and nylon nut on the bottom. Also don't forget to silicon around the bolt where you drill you holes to avoid having any moister going through. I'll try and get some better pictures for you tomorrow.

Today I made a ceiling attachment system. Very similar to @DrFunker one shown earlier. I used wire rope, ferrule, home made captured brackets. I added loops at ends.

This is a nice mod, as it allows me to hang lightweight items from the roof, like fishing poles, clothes, wet stuff, etc.

I'm pleased with it. My almost 5 year old daughter immediately started hanging things. Good to have a helper. :)

Also, i could not find what i wanted in a home store so, i hand made these brackets. Made in 'Merica!
