I've always liked the look of the SnugTop cab-highs, but this Century came on mine. The quality and features are way better than my old SnugTop, but it might just be evolution. Because I sleep in my truck, I like the extra height. Mine has carpeted insulation, Velcro curtains and BedRug. With my Futon, Motel 6 has nothing on me.

Hey guys I found someone willing to sell me their Snugtop Supersport for a double cab short bed. He is looking to get $450 for it. He no longer has the mounting hardware or key though.

How does the snugtop mount? Can I go to the hardware store and buy some parts to secure it? The key thing sounds like it might run between $10-30.

Also it is Silver and my truck is Black, any downside to taking it to a bodyshop to have it painted versus ordering it colormatched? I'm guessing paint will run about $500.

    Shell 450
    Key 30
    Hardware 100
    Paint 500

So I'm looking close to $1100 after it's all said and done I'm assuming. Should I pull the trigger or keep searching till I find a used one in my color?

How old is the cap? Is it the exact style you're wanting? If it's pretty new and all the window hardware, gaskets and pistons are like new I think it's a "fair" but not great deal. If it's an older cap and in a year or so you have to start replacing pistons and such maybe not so good. Tough call man, it's the need for a color change that's hurting the deal.
IMHO I would hold out for a used one in the right color or buy new.

Supposedly it's a year old and has been sitting off the truck for the past 5 months collecting dust. The gu said he would give it 9 out of 10 since its dirty. Could call on checking the pistons. The side windows don't have trim since it's edgeless so I don't need to worry about dealing with screens.

I agree paint is sort of killing the deal, I'll see if maybe he can come down another $100 off the shell. The guy said he can't store it anymore and that it has to go so maybe I can use that to my advantage.

ARE Z series cap - I got the sliding side windows instead of the really nice looking ones that only bump out a bit. More ventilation for when I sleep back there. :D

    TY,

If it's only a "verifiable" year old that is good as there should be no problems with wearable items such as pistons or gaskets. I looked up what I paid for my A.R.E. color matched stuff 8 months ago. Don't know how that stacks up to Snugtop but here goes ... CX series cap $1200, slider in front $75, side "widoors" $175, mounting hardware and bed seal $75. Total pre tax and pre $400 Yakima roof rack of $1525.
I think you might be able to do just a little better than $500 for paint but you don't want to skimp too much with that cause a good paint job is important for durability, looks and resale value. If you could talk the guy down another hundred on the selling price then....?

As I said earlier $450 for a year old cap is definately fair...$350 is really good. Can't really penalize the seller cause it does'nt match your truck. All in all if you could get the total price down to around $800 or so I might change my recommendation and maybe pull the trigger on the deal, still a tough call though. I looked this up too and Murphys law says a good used cap in just your color is sure to turn up just a week after you do this deal!

Best of luck with the decision!!

Thanks for the advice guys. I passed on it for myself since I figure a black one will turn up eventually. However, my brother pulled the trigger on it. Pistons and all the seals are in great shape. He has an impulse red tacoma so he knows that color is hard to come by that's why he jumped on this.

Now to go search some more for a black one...

I just haven't heard of this brand. While looking for a used cap I came across one that is on a Tacoma at the local dealership. Its the same color so I wouldn't have to get it painted. From the pictures it has sliding side windows w/ a sliding front window(by the cab). They are trying to come up with a price and let me know. Just wasn't sure if it was a decent brand or not.
