Anyone with a Marlin 30-30? Or something similar? Looking into getting a lever action rifle next year since my grandpa always wanted one but never did. Ideally a Henry would be my choice but no way I can afford it. I want to spend under $500 if I can. Doesn't have to be new hell doesn't have to be from the last 20 years just has to fire and have that smooth feel haha

When I get rich I'll buy a colt army SSA

You can pick up a Henry for $6 or 700. A nice Marlin for $5 or 600 and a winchesters for a little less than that. Look for a Savage 99. Came in many calibers. 30-30, 308, 300 Savage, 243.

Oh what? Henry and Winchester are that cheap?! I just want one that screens gun smoke and magnificent 7 ya know? Loads from the side of the action not a tube fed.

What's the most "iconic" round for a lever action 45-70? 30-30?

I have a Marlin 336 handed down to me from my Dad, the only thing I want to add to it is sights (I pulled the nikon scope off to put on my 6.8SPC upper) and a hammer extension.

I had a chance the other day to finally take her to the range. Awesome firing carbine. Smooth and accurate. However, to get down on the sites, you almost have to rest your cheek on the bolt tube... let's just say there's a reason they make an aftermarket bolt tube cover that's soft. I had a small red mark on my cheek after putting 60 rounds through it.

30-30 is the better "all-around choice." Cheaper and easier to shoot, and the guns are cheaper too. You can find a used Marlin 336 for less than $300 at any given time.

45-70 in a compact lever gun is for people who don't like their shoulder, honestly. It's a thumper. 30-30, on the other hand, you can shoot all day, for less money, and you can push it out just as far (for practical purposes) with some practice.

And they made a jazillion of them, between the different manufacturers, so 30-30 Lever guns are crazy common to find used on the rack or the local gun rag, in good shape, for cheap money.

Yeah I need to just suck it up and go to some pawn shops. Gun broker, guns america, and cal guns seem to not help yet.

Gunbroker.com is the best bet (I did read your post below before I wrote this). Just gotta keep at it and eventually you'll strike gold. http://www.gunbroker.com/item/587797726

Early 60s models will be more expensive. I bought one made in the early 90s for $300 about 2 years ago, and it came with 60 rounds of ammo. There are deals to be had.

Gun shows, gun shops and pawn shops will have a diamond in the rough every now and then.

It's likely because of your location, when I lived in so-cal I couldn't find a decently priced lever 30-30, once I moved out here to Miss. I can find them in pawn shops in used condition for ~300 and beater guns for ~175-200
