Was going to get a Ruger RPR but I think I'm going with a Tikka instead.

    Any input?

Get the McFadden lightnin loader. It's awesome. I've loaded 1,000s of round with it.

    OK.

My New Year's Resolution is to build my own AR-type rifle. I have no idea where to begin.

I have an RPR in .308. shot like shit out of the box. Sent back to Ruger 3 times, they said nothing wrong w/ grouping. A friend bought one & then upgraded his barrel. I took his take off barrel to my gunsmith & swapped them out & now it’s a shooter. Would I buy another? Nope. Lots of better choices today that guarantee sub MOA & include a target. Ruger guarantees nothing. Mine.[IMG]

Thanks. They are a lot of fun to shoot...they point, handle, and weigh about the same as a .22. Light and quick. I'd like to get my hands on one in .44 Mag as well, but won't hold my breath on that one.

You need a lower, upper, and myriad of accessories and upgrades. Budget dictates a lot. I would, and do, upgrade the trigger. I prefer Geissele SSA-E two stage. I've purchased one as cheap as $160 but only saw that price once and recently. They have a "lesser" version I wouldn't hesitate to buy if on a tight budget. If it's really tight then a PSA EPT trigger for $40 is a decent solution. The 'one' I've handled has zero take up, broke like a carrot and over travel was as expected on a mil spec trigger. It is heavy but there's noting wrong with that unless you're looking to make it a SPR.

I forget the guys name but there is someone with a youtube channel who goes around searching with his metal detecter and he more often than not finds old firearms sunk in nasty mudd deep under water.

always amazed at how often he pulls up old guns.

I will share the link when I find it

Paranoia about that is actually what made me upgrade my safe to a fire resistant model a few years back.

"RECOIL" Magazine did a piece on these earlier this year, of course it was a positive review. Been wondering how they actually perform with an unbiased user.

It’s pretty accurate now but what a job getting there. I think the bulk of RPR’s are good out of the box but there people like me that get a bad one. It’s been talked about on several other forums. I think what pissed me off the most was Ruger’s lack of give a shit about groupings. They will tell you it will shoot 1000 yards but back off when you ask about sub MOA performance. I have a Rem 700 in same .308 chambering that has a ton of work done to it- probably more than I should have. It will shoot circles around the RPR. Go to any other websites RPR discussion & doesn’t take long for the upgrade recommendations to start. They are all the same. Replace barrel followed by a chassis change. WTF? Should have read that before I bought. I bought it because of all the hype. Never shot one until I got mine. I paid around a grand for a second gen ($1499 MSRP). Sadly, you need to dump another grand or more (mostly more) in it to make it a legit player. If I was buying right now- I’d be all over the Bergara B-14 BMP. A few dollars more but a lot more rifle!

The Tikka is a great choice. I have a T3 but not a chassis. Great shooter! Did you get the T3X TAC A1? I have a friend that has this rifle & love it. I would love to get my hands on the TK3/Beretta TSR in 260. A price of 2k seems high to some but this is about as close as you can get to a custom rifle. If I wasn’t retired on SS........................................
