But you will lose mpg’s stepping up to the ST Maxx, even from AT3’s which I had before these. Lost 1.5 mpg’s after the switch.

Doin research for my *finally soon!* lift and tire upgrade. Keeping my 16” TRD Beadlock wheels. Looking at 255/85/16s (preferred) or maybe 265/75/16s — I currently have 265/70/16s... Looking online I only see the Discoverer S/T Maxx and Discoverer S/T in the 255s. Can someone explain what the difference would be? I rarely have any weight in the bed of the truck, and don’t do much in the way of wheeling.

Just two different tires. The maxx are more aggressive, heavier, etc. seeing both the st and st maxx 255 in person, I’d recommend maxx.

Try to find some pictures of both the tires on a Tacoma. You will see that the maxx is slightly wider than the S/T in that size.

Any difference in performance? 98% highway/in town driving. Aggressive look is preferred for visual appearance, but need something more functional for roads over trails.

Went from a Hankook 265/70/16 - 285/75/16, really didn't see much difference in MPG or performance I have a steel bumper on too. The big difference is what type of load rating. If you're doing predominately Highway I'd go 255's.

Ok cool - I was thinkin 285s if i did more wheeling or chose the Maxtrac spindle lift but I don’t think I will. So now do I wanna pay more and get the 255s or suck it up and stay closer to home with 265/75/16? (Currently have 265/70/16)

As a point of reference, the 255's will do better in the snow, and the 265's will do better in the mud. But I must say my 265's are pretty badass in the snow. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. MPG's are negligible. I'd say make your decision based on the look you're going for.

I'd go 255's if I were you. No CMC or Rub with stock suspension just more ground clearance. Also you can usually swindle a deal with your Local National Tire Battery or Discount Tire. That's what I did. 285's & 255's were going to run be 240 ea and talked them down to 185 with install OTD. Then I decided I wanted Phat tires cause there cool with a after market bumper. If I had a stock front end I would of gone 255's.

Edit - If you're a pre runner doing a spindle definitely get 285's you'll like the look more... 4 inches in the air with pizza cutters would look kinda weird in my opinion haha.

Yeah I’m staying away from the spindles...really don’t want a full 4”....trying to keep it 2.5”-3”.....I love the look of 255s...will definitely try to talk down NTB or Discojnt Tire...didn’t know haggling was “a thing”

Yes it most definitely is! Use their prices against each other. They're based on commission and both just trying to make a sale.

If you like the look of the 255's, skip the 265/75 now, or you'll end up buying both. Liked my 265/75 but every time I saw the 255 ST MAXX's on this website I kicked myself.

When I got mine, Discount Tires' ebay store had cheaper prices than the store. I took the print out in and the manager honored it. He said they are suppose to be the same. The ebay prices change every 1-2 weeks so check back often. I went back and looked and found I got the best prices for Presidents Day. They always have good deals on holidays.
    I got my 265/75/16 for $198/tire + $25 Certs + $16 install+ 8.125% Tax (-75 rebate = I drove out for $945 installed)
(and to top it off...I had my duratracs with 30K on them in the bed on the way home...stopped to get gas..and some landscapers approached me and bought them for $150 cash)

Sounds like the whole situation worked out pretty well for ya. $945 sounds so high but I guess that’s actually a pretty great price for it all. Do you have a lift on there? It looks great!

Rubber is a traded commodity..so the price will fluctuate over the years. I just checked ebay...Discount has a 10% instant discount. they want $712 (Plus Certs, install, tax)...so right now is even better price than what I paid 2 yerars ago.

Just 5100s at 1.75 on the front.

I’m also curious about the mileage on this size. It’s a bigger size so the odometer will read something like 8% less than the distance traveled right?
Is the size difference being accounted for here in the mpg calcs.
    (1.08 x mileage)/gallons.
By that train of thought...will putting these tires on my truck keep the mileage down on the odo.
