I'll have to check it out. I always thought Sketchup would be very basic, but I'll give it a try. I'm certified in Solidworks, trained in AutoCAD and am a Machinist. Wish I could use the machines at work for personal projects though. :/

Edit: I like that it has a one time non-expiring license should I decide to sell things. Hmm.

Not really DIY armour but I finished the "some assembly required" sliders from 4xinnovations. I went ahead with the 120 V Lincoln Weldpak 140 that I was considering and it worked out pretty well I think. A large source of error I'm sure was my welding ability but aside from that it appeared to have pretty good penetration and lay a half decent bead for flux core. Even though they aren't perfect... they sure are solid! Next up is the frame reinforcements.

Those welds look pretty good. Stacked dimes is what you look for in a weld. That'd pass in my welding class I took last year.

How much did the welder run you?

Are your wheels fj steelies? I've been thinking about getting some plain black steelies.

Someone in KC is selling a set of FJ steelies for $300.

Edit: Might be gone. If you're interested I could message on them.

Ehh tempting, but I'll have to pass. I'm not looking to get any right away necessarily. Where did you see that at? I'm only 4 hrs from KC and have friends up there

In the Kansas City Toyota Club on FB. There was a guy who bought a new lift and bigger tires and was selling his FJ steelies and spacers for $300. It was posted on OCT 31st though.

Mine are actually the tacoma spare 16” steel wheels. The first steelies are 17” if I’m not mistaken, and I’m not a fan of that size. The more rubber the better.

Currently building a high clearance rear. I want to add some bedside hoops. Thinking 1.5” tubing. Is there a “poor man’s” technique for bending tube without a bender? Don’t know anyone with one, and the local fab shop doesn’t have one either (really?).

    Appreciate any feedback

@Robertocritser i know you have some fab voodoo up your sleeve. Any ideas?

Here's a pic of my Sandlot Fab rear bumper build I finally finished this weekend. I used 6" channel for the main section. The ends for the gen3 are a challenge compared to my old 98 tacoma. It weighed 77.5 lbs. on the bathroom scale. I have about $125 in it. Well that's not counting the $400 in beer.

Hey rngr instead of trying to bend tube. All of my “bends” are made with weld 90’s cut to the angle needed. A big plumbing supply store should sell them. After they are cut weld it all up and grind the welds smooth with a flap disc.

That’s crafty! Wouldn’t have thought of that.

After thinking on it, I think I’m just going to find a shop with a bender and have them do it. Someone suggested I try an exhaust shop. I know they’ll have a bender. Not sure if they’ll have the dies for something that small though.

The rest of your assembly is square tubing, why change it? I'm partial to the square myself with that said the bender is on order however!

My old neighbor growing up came over and helped me swap beds, build the motor, trans, and swap them in my old '75 Chevy p-up. Then when the neighbor across the st. threatened to call the city and report 2 non running vehicles he went over there and told him he just needs to leave well enough alone or he'll call the city for him not getting building permits for his garage for the RV. Pretty badass old retired neighbor I had. Saw him the other week visiting the folks and he commented and said he like my Tacoma.

These DIY armor projects have a lot of great ideas and inspiration!
