ive caught a bunch of pike on spoon with no steel leader and then I lost a big one...with one of my favorite spoons. Im still 50/50 on using steel leaders. If you can get them in the lip and keep the line up/tight usually you can get them in without the line snapping.

Try some 30lb fluorocarbon leader. Low stretch and has the same refractory index as water, meaning it virtually disappears underwater. It’s caught me some of the nastiest toothy critters in the ocean off of Florida (aside from sharks) as well as around bridges and docks and piers. Good stuff. Though it is wise to rerig after a serious tussle with said toothy critter. If 30 wont do it, go to 40...

We have been fishing the same lake for 28 years now and rarely hit catfish... We were bobber fishing for bluegills in NW Illinois for father's dad. I hit this guy on an Ultralight w/ 6lb test which put up an insane fight and i had to be super careful getting him in... he lost a similar size fish at the boat just after.
    catfish4.jpg

Went back to the same spot with a little bit heavier tackle later in the day. and my dad hit this guy!
    catdad.jpg
2 casts later I hit this monster channel cat! Slaughtered the previous fight i did not think I had a chance of getting it in. Same thing bobber small piece of worm right up on shore. Did not weigh it but it was just over 29." Actually the biggest fish I have ever caught. What a FLUKE day!

    catfish1.jpg catfish2.jpg
All in all we kept 32 bluegill, 3 walleye, then threw back the 3 cats, 1 walleye caught on cranks, and too many bass to count. Great father's day memories!

Thank you. They are Large Mouth aka Black bass. At least that's what we call them.

Sure looks like it to me. I think they're all the same type fish , but known by different names.

Black bass is a “catch all” for smallmouth largemouth spotted etc
Sometimes largemouth have spots on their lateral lines, I think the only reliable way to tell the difference between largemouth and spots is the spots have a toothy kinda rough tongue and they tend to be smaller

round here we say "Bass" as general for Spotted bass and smallies. but really its a bit different to catch a 3lb smallie and a 3lb spotted bass. Im leaning more towards spotted bass here but we typically call them "large mouths"...
