In my personal opinion a 4k sized reel is overkill for fresh water unless you want to bait n wait. 40# braid is also overkill imo.
I have found that there is no one do it all rod.
I’m not saying you can’t by with what you’ve got but the right tool for the right job will make your fishing experience that much more enjoyable

It worked well kayak fishing for pelagics but yes it is a bit overkill for fresh water for sure.

I’m having to travel as light as possible, I’m lucky I’ve managed to bring two rods with me!

Guess I’ll throw the 14lb mono on and be done.

Yeah I don’t really fish in a yak/boat mainly because I can’t afford one lol.
but depending on what I am targeting will determine what outfit I plan to use.
I’m all land based and my outfits range from 6’6”-13’
Freshwater is newer to me I mainly fish from the surf , backbays inlets etc.

For soft plastics and lighter lures and jigs I will scale down to 6’6”-7’6” paired with a 2k-3k sized reel with 6#-15# braid

I hear ya, I used to be a mechanic and understand there’s a right tool for every job, however you can also probably get by with a hammer and a screwdriver!

In HI I started off with a 10ft kayak in and one rod and made it do. Finished up with 4 rods, fish finder, gps and lots of gear for the job at hand.
When I started I was using an 8” artificial mackerel trolling lure that has ball bearings in and sits 3/4 ft down. On 3 consecutive trips out I had 4 Tiger sharks bigger than my yak come up and say hello. Each time they made contact with the yak, the last time it happened was during a tourney held by the Hobie dealer and I was ready to call it quits.

During weigh in I told my stories about being visited by the tax man many times and they all thought bs, typically you only get visited by sharks once you’ve caught something. Anyway I upgraded to a Hobie Revo, a bigger and more seaworthy yak with training wheels ;)

The dealer had been telling my stories to peeps and some divers reckoned they knew why I was getting visited. They use a empty plastic bottle with stones in, they rattle and crunch the bottle and that brings the tigers in for the tourist divers. (Sounds like bones being crushed and eaten)

Dealer told me what the divers said, I stopped using that lure and didn’t get a unexpected visit from the tax man for the remaining 6 years I fished.

Hobie was a game changer for being in 1,000ft water.

A few pics of some wire bent by a missed bite, a chomped opelu, a uku, mahi, tuna…

A storm was rolling in so we weren't gonna keep anything and this was the first thing she pulled in so I grabbed some twin to make a stringer think we might catch a mess before the rain... The rest were just bigger than the hooks we were using lol so we pitched him back
