So if you're swimming and a shark attacks you the best course of action is to hug it so it feels full and won't bite?...

I’ve heard a bunch of theories like this but think about how much pressure there is under water and it gets more as a fish goes deeper. How could they ever notice the minuscule barometric pressure change.
I think it is more related to sunlight. Fish tend to feed during low light conditions. High pressure days are generally more sunny meaning the fish are less likely to feed.

Was this a charter trip or with a buddy? Been wanting to try gigging but all the charters in the area are $$$. I'm about an hour from Fernandina.

My most productive charters have been pre storm or during a weather front rolling in. Barometric pressure drops. It definitely affects the fish.

Is it the barometric pressure or the overcast skies or wave action? How can a fish possibly sense that pressure change and know that the minute pressure change is due to weather coming in rather than just it swimming down a couple feet in the water column?
Swim on the surface of a pool and then swim to the bottom in the deep end, the pressure change is huge. Now multiply that by much more for how deep the fish could be.

    Yes I do

I'm a believer in barometric pressure...
Many years ago my dad and a buddy of his went to a local (small) lake and wore out some bass. They caught lots of small ones and 3 or 4 in the 5-6 pound range. The weather that day was miserable, 95° and humid. So the next day they decide to go back and me and a buddy tagged along in a seperate boat; so now there's 4 of us fishing the same spots, using the same baits...nothing, not even a bite. The only difference was the weather; we had a high pressure front move in that night, the temp went from a balmy 95° to a rather pleasant and cloudless 75°. They got the lockjaw. :notsure:

The fish don’t ‘sense’ the barometric pressure. The drop in pressure makes their stomachs expand so the fish are hungry during the pressure drop.
To your point, I do agree that overcast conditions promote better fishing.
The barometric pressure drop is a definite for better bite. The record striper caught from land was caught during a NorEaster from a jetty.
