Show off your fish

Interesting, now when you say it forces the fish through the inlets, I'm guessing the cold snap causes a sharp drop in the temps of the shallow waters and the fish seek "warmer" water along the beach? I'd like to assume it would have the same effect here in FL assuming we get a big/long enough drop in temps to move the fish. I'll take anything I can learn to make my fishing more productive. I didn't get in to surf fishing till I moved to FL from VA but it's a shame because I am realizing now how much I could have done in the OBX.

 

That’s exactly what I mean. The sound will freeze over in 2-3 days of sub freezing temps. So that’s about how long until the fish leave. The ones that don’t usually float to the surface after the sound thaws.

Nice Fish! What weight fly rod were you using? Also, was it a productive deer season? I was eyeballing GA for next year until I saw the price of out-of-state licenses.

 

I had my 3 wt with me. Fun fight on that little thing for sure.

I ended up with 1 buck and 4 does (3 on private land, one on WMA). Saw a lot that I let walk. If you’re just going for meat, stay in south ga because up here where I’m at, you can’t shoot a doe unless you’re on private land.

 

Nice, I'm trying to remember what I have. I think a 4-5wt. Another thing I need to get back in to but the fishing isn't quite the same in FL.

Thats awesome, plenty of meat for the freezer! Hopefully the deer up your way are bigger than down here. I actually hunted for the first time in almost a decade this year up in PA with my family and took down a doe. The last day of my trip I saw a big body buck about 150 yards out but never had a clear shot on him. There's always next year. Thanks for the advice, I'll likely just look into stuff here in NE FL and do another PA trip this year, keep things simple.

Lake trout on the fly

did u catch the sturgeon and pike on the long rod too?

 

Early and late season Lake trout can be easier to do on a fly but that was mid summer in 70ft. Nothing quite like strip setting when your already in backing.
I have put some hours into trying to get a sturgeon on the fly but without scent it is incredibly difficult. Having mega live on the boat this year may make it a touch easier knowing exactly where they are.
Not that particular pike but I have caught alot of pike on fly. This river pike was quite memorable. Was tossing small streamers on a 5wt for browns when this 37" came out tp play, no idea how that 10lb leader didn't get bit off.

As spring creeps in, March/April marks the start of the spring pompano run in NE FL. They haven’t really made their way past Flagler/St. Augustine yet, but the warmer temps are kicking up the whiting bite. A few hours and a pound of shrimp later I went home with a few days worth of fish tacos. Hoping to smack em again this weekend and fill the freezer.

 

All I saw was pompano in your post and was like.. wait a minute we call em Whitings here in Texas. Then I fully read the post
