^^I still have to get out there and trout fish. I hit the streams last year but there are 2 lakes that are stocked around me with rainbow trout.

Posted just so everyone can chuckle at this absolute monstrosity I caught. Only thing I caught the entire day, and my last catch of the fall.

I am going to completely change my way of fishing this season. I want to learn to fish a baitcaster. I am also going to fish lures and techniques I normally wouldnt fish, such as floating frogs and buzzbaits.... My goal this year is a 7 lb bass.....

How is the attractant produced? Is it a spray or dip? I used to fish for catfish all the time using minnows. Then I moved to the more smelly stuff what ever dough balls they sell and chicken livers that I bought a couple day before I went out fishing. All those methods worked and caught in the range or 3 inch catfish to 30 lbers..

Where you live toughtaco? Some advice to take or leave but thought I would give you my .02. First off I am an avid bass fisherman, been fishing for bass for about 25 years.

Don't force yourself to learn a baitcast unless it is needed for your particular situations. Are you fishing a bunch of flooded timber and heavy grass slop. If you are a baitcast is going to be needed in these situations. If you fish clear lakes with heavy pressure a good spinning rod is the best friend you might have.

Don't get me wrong a baitcaster is probably your best all around bass reel, because you can basically fish anything on it any any lure. I still struggle with small light lures, but I have seen people master them with a baitcaster. I stick to spinning rods when I need to really size down my lure.

It really all is about your fishing situations. Word of warning if you are going to get a baitcaster, get a good one. A cheap one is just that and will backlash and drive you crazy. Spend at least $100 and get a good reel. Anything that has a good braking system on it will go a long way. Shimano Citaca and Curado are great reels that are very forgiving to newbs. Bass Pro started it's huge Spring Fishing Classic this last weekend, I picked up a KVD PT 7:1 burner for $109, retail about $149 at Bass Pro. The reel trade in sale is all week, and the rod trade in starts next weekend.

That brings up something else when I mentioned rod. You are going to need to match your rod to your lure selection. Spinning reels combos are a little more forgiving because you can match several lures to a rod. With a baitcaster you wouldn't want to use your flipping stick for spinner baits and vice versa. I use 3 or 4 good basic set ups on my baitcasters. A pool cue 7'0'' heavy rod with a fast tip and a moderate to slow retrieve baitcast reel set up with braid or 20lb + line. This set up can handle worms, jigs, tubes, craws, frogs and in a pinch swim baits. Next set up is a 7'0'' fiberglass cranking rod with a high speed reel and 12-16 lb line. Next is more of an all purpose 6'6'' MH, moderate action with a 6:1 or faster reel and usually lighter line in the 10-12 range. This last rod can be used for just about anything from light line pitching to a spinnerbait.
