Toughtaco: Not to critize hendooman, but you do not have to spend $100 on a baitcasting reel to get a good one. Go to academy sports and get the H20 Mettle, its like $50. It is the BEST baitcaster I have ever throw. And if it breaks they give you a new one. I would throw that reel over any $300 Diawa or Quantum, and yes I have thrown them. While your there, pick up the H20 rods. Get a worm rod and a crankbait rod, they have them categorized. Get 7' or more if possible. The longer the better. Put them bad puppies on there and some 15-20 lb test and your good to go. Trust me you will not be disappointed. Actually I may have an extra reel.. PM sent.

Nice write up, I have been fishing for a little bit longer...... 30 years.... I havent caught any bass bigger then 5 lb which I caught last year. I live in Orange County, NY which is high enough in the Northeast that there is a short Bass season. The weather is cold so the fish dont have the chance to really grow BIG. I want to push myself to get to the 7 lb range. Within the last couple years I bought some upper mid level spinning rods and reels. I am happy with them, I mainly run 20 lb braid. Lately I have been fishing worms and jigs slow and on the bottom. It seems I have hit the wall with the size, dont get me wrong I have been catching alot of fish even lots in the 3 and 4 lb range... only 1 five pound bass though. So that is where I strive to try something new. Not just the baitcaster but also newer baits. I was thinking about like a 6 or 7 inch swim bait, I have had some luck with live frogs but I want to use fake frogs too. I have had luck with spinner baits, just want to use them more often. I kayak fish but I want to hit lakes and spots I normally wouldnt fish that are known to hold big fish, like areas loaded with lilypads. The lakes around me are under a foot or two deep but loaded with lilypads..... I am talking like an acre.... Thanks for the write up, sorry it was so long but any other information would be appreciated.

A nice little 16" smallmouth from a local lake last summer. I usually run a light spinning rig with 4 lb test. I like fishing the shallows out of a rowboat - I get a workout that way!

I'm definitely an amateur fisherman, but I like it.

No, just straight 25lb, no backing, only a 25lb floro 3ft leader on a little Avet MX. It spooled me several times but never all the way down, we chased it for about an hour at 15 knots while it greyhounded and put on a hell off a show. Finally got it turned around and got a couple gaff's in it after 2.5 hours. We had limits of Dorado, a Mako, few Yellowtail, dozen Yellowfin and a half dozen Albacore to go with it, hell of a day on the pond.

I have caught a swordfish but never a sailfish. I want to land one..... I know there arent too many spots around here for sailfish but the next time I am in the area of sailfishing I am going to give it a try.

Never heard that I am sure that would not be safe for the lake though.
