Thanks man! The initial purchase of the bike off Pinkbike was a STEAL, but def not cheap by any means lol. Love it with the 40's in the front. Pretty much it can do 80% of what a pure DH bike can do on descents, but with the added ability to climb pretty damn well being at 32 lbs!

Just sayin man, you obviously have good taste in suspension. My question is why does Fox bike suspension cost the same or more than their truck suspension??? :frusty:

    Haha right?!?

I'd imagine it's because of the competition(or lack thereof) in each market...?

How I see it, with off road vehicle suspension, Fox has both direct/indirect competition from King, Icon, Eibach, Fabtech, Pro Comp, Sway-A-Way, Radflow etccc just to name only a FEW.

In the mountain bike market, Fox really only has RockShox to compete with[Marz & X-Fusion will only grow in their market shares over time I'm sure] so both manufacturers can basically set prices to whatever they want. They both know the majority of consumers only know to buy those 2 brands when shopping for "proven" suspension components. Most bike manufacturers only supply Fox or RockShox as original equipment so that in itself solidifies their hold on market share.

All mountain biking parts/bikes are stupid expensive. My dirtbike I bought for $5800 bucks new and you could easily drop that on a bike. My dirtbike goes 100mph and can soak up 3 foot deep whoops. Now that I think about it I need to sell that thing and get a new one. Anyone wanna buy a WR250f 2008? Haha

Edit: Ok it only does 75

    Lol!

Granted, nowadays, I agree the initial money spent on dirt bikes and mountain bikes are be pretty similar now but mtb's will ALWAYS be cheaper in the long run.

When you factor in $ spent on fuel(gas vs your legs[free!] ), time and $ spent on regular maintenance(motor oil vs chain lube etc), $ spent on tires, and ease of entry into the hobby("beater" dirt bikes are more expensive than "beater" mountain bikes).....mtb's are much cheaper.

Also can't forget to factor in non-monetary things as well like being able to ride a bike anywhere & anytime as opposed to having to usually transport a dirtbike to a designated riding area, ease of transporting(dirtbike weight > mtb weight), and ease of storage storage.

Pinkbike.com is probably my favorite place to find deals on bike parts. ;)

I've got a RockShox Boxxers WC fork & Vivid Air on my V10 carbon while my Nomad carbon has a Fox 40 and a Fox DHX RC4.....honestly, these combinations are equally good.

Fox & RockShox are the standards, but aren't the end all imo and I've gone through a lot of forks and shocks from both brands.

I'd be willing to entertain a future build using an X-Fusion fork/shock or a Manitou(mainly the Dorado inverted strut dual crown) fork without hesitating....based on what I've seen and felt myself.

It's like how Ferraris and Lambos are PROVEN top food chain supercars, but sometimes that one underdog car(like a Nissan GTR) will come up out of nowhere and go side by side with the big dogs to give them a damn good run for their money.

For a beginner ... who wants a decent mountain bike around $500.00 ... where would you guys go ??

I won't do many trails and no heavy duty riding ... mostly use it on some dirt roads and paved roads with small hills.

Around $500.00 won't get me the ... "Porsche of Bikes" ... but I need something to start with ... to check if my knees will take it.

Could I get the most bang for the buck on the internet or would you go to a local bike store like Roswell Bicycles http://www.roswellbicycles.com ??

Any Do's or Don'ts and/or suggestions would be appreciated too.

    Thanks ... :D

I would probably check out craigslist first if you don't mind buying used, sometimes you can find great deals on there and get a better frame with better component spec than you could getting a new bike from a shop.

you could also check out pinkbike.com but most of the stuff on there is like all-mountain/freeride/downhill/dirt jump stuff, you might be able to find some shorter travel bikes on there though

I think CL might yield you a better deal but the local bike shop will be able to help you get a bike that fits and that helps avoid doing further damage to your knees.

I don't know about the shop. But the website looks nice. I can almost bet they won't have a $500 bike. However, you might ask if they have a rental policy-you rent a bike and if you decide to buy, your rental fees are put toward the purchase of your bike.

    Good luck!

Definitely listen to the guys above me.

Pinkbike.com or local Craigslist will be your best bet.

My only advice is to stick with the bike brands that your local bike shop regularly sell so that servicing/maintaining the bike will be that much easier.

A $500 GOOD used bike > $500 brand new bike usually. Never buy a bike from a huge retail store like Walmart, Sears, etc those bikes are cheaply made and it will definitely show over time.

Go to your local bike shop, find a size that will fit you, find a brand you like, and then go back home and scour Pinkbike/Craigslist.
