Here's what looks like the base model:

Carbon rear triangle saves 400 grams over the previous alloy version
    • Revised front triangle saves 300 grams over the previous version
    • New carbon upper link to increase stiffness.
    • Co-molded aluminium hardware on upper pivot and bottom bracket - no bonding
    • Forged aluminum lower link with recessed grease ports
    • Indexed, 157-millimeter rear axle spacing for easier wheel installation
    • New integrated fork bumpers with cable guide
    • Direct mount rear derailleur hanger
    • Two travel settings: 10 inches (254mm) or 8.5 inches (216mm)
    • Total frame weight: 7.9 pounds (3.6 kg) M size, Fox DHX RC4 shock
    • MSRP: DHX $3,499 USD | VIVID $3,599 USD

Still a respectable DH bike at a reasonable price.

This is the best thing to do. Carrying an extra link or three isn't a bad idea as long as it's from your current model chain though I'd rather just deal with the chain tool.

I dont know if this is going to work but it did last night when I pulled apic off the net. This is my comparison on the Santa Cruz. This is the Niner WFO9, I priced a couple out with all kinds of components, it I have got a couple setups in the $5500 area. I demoed this bike and it is awesome, travel for days... I liked it and if I could ever push this bike and ride the h#$% out of it I would.

idk if you meant that your comparing the niner to the v10c but thats definitely not apples to apples. a more apples to apples comparison would probably be the santa cruz tallboy LT versus the niner

From your post I got that you need 10spd chain. Anyway they also have some decent deals on other 10spd drivetrain components atm. Also check Pricepoint.com.

I have always been a fan of SRAM for drivetrain components. They are so much cheaper than Shimano especially if you find them on eBay, with light use or something. I have done that quite a bit, because it's something that's going to break, as you had happen, or wear out inevitably. It's not like a handlebar or saddle where it's worth spending the money to save grams.

Also, I never carry master links, but I do carry the two-piece breakaway pins that are used to re-link a broken chain. Pushing an existing pin back in has never held up for longer than a few miles on my bikes.

    np.

Actually if you are ok spending your originally quoted $70 and to qualify for free shipping which is over $50, looks like you can get some spare parts for cheap in adition to the XT chain.

Add SLX 10spd cassette on sale for $30 and an SLX 10spd front derailleur for $10 and keep them as spare parts and be still below $70. :D How about Deore 10spd cranks with BB for $40? Of course these may be lower spec or different riding style than what you have or need. I just got carried away with the shopping cart and sales here. :)

No just a good GH bike, the SC tallboy LT is nice, never rode it. I would say the V10C is in a class all by itself.

no like I said the SC is in a class of its own. I was trying to put up a better choice for a lot less. I did ride the WFO9 and it was amazing. Like a caddie over rocks and bumps

ohhh i see, yeah that niner is probably a good do it all bike, one of the guys i rode with says he tried a giant trance x 29er and he said its probably one of the most versatile bikes hes ever ridden, he said it is a different style to ride compared to a 26er though.

It was weird as I written it up before after I demoed the WFO9, the front tire is really out far that made tight turns comfortable to make. Didnt take much movement to tackle twisties and tight turns.
