I am 5'9" and I was on the fence on going with another 29er. At 5' I would stick with 26". 29ers are more forgiving but are slower to react and it is farther to the ground if you wreck.

Thanks for all the replies guys. One of the last rides I had was kind of slow paced where I was jumping from the fast group to the slow group, not kind of knowing where I fit in. I came around a decent corner and there was a huge drop off which I kind of got stuck under the seat post for a second which wasnt comfortable..... I might try to demo one if the LBS has one around.

I know how you feel haha. Luckily around here its mostly long climbs and long descents so for the most part I ride up with the seat where its supposed to be and on the downhills more of a "trail" position like the fox DOSS dropper. although its not the best for pedaling its good enough for short climbs.

the specialized command post is another one I like the sound of. its not too expensive and its supposed to be pretty good

Took my wife to the LBS last night and got her fitted for an XS giant revel 1. All they had in stock was a small but it was too big.

They sell the womens version of the revel 1 at the same price as the mens. Other than the top tube being slightly different would there be any thing different?

Do female mtn bikers normally ride standard bikes or go for the womens version?

    time for some google :pccoffee:

EDIT: answered some of my own questions. I checked the giant website and it looks like the top tube and the standover height is about an inch difference between the mens and womens revel 1
Its not a bad looking bike either

i worked at a high end bike shop from 2002-2008. I was there when the women specific design hit.

women have longer legs and shorter torso. you can setup a std bike for this but if the bike you want comes in a womens version i would definately go for that one. just be sure she has average proportions.

instead of just slapping on a shorter stem and getting narrow handlebars usually the manufacterer will shorten the top tube for the WSD.

they may dislike the WSD at first because they are used to the "wrong" fit. WSD will be more ergonomically correct and will help in the long run.
