Besides, with the chain off, you're more likely to clean the cassette and other parts.

yeah i might have to start doing that. usually i just take the wheel off and use a brush/ rag to clean the cassette...thinking about cleaning my bike really needs some care haha i havent touched it since my last ride...it needs a new chain and fork and shock need servicing haha. The bb could probably use some grease too its starting to squeak.

    Yes, I sold my '13 Taco. :'(

I'm on 13 sessions with my trigger attachment and it still works like the day I bought it. The picture of my chain I posted was session #11.

For people not wanting to take the chain off, it is MORE than adequate when used properly. You can't just grip and rip the thing, there is a finesse needed. The only thing janky about it is the straw to fill the box. No complaints beyond that.

Hey, Let me back pedal a bit. For a guy like myself, one that was a bike mechanic for some time, I found it was NOT optimal for me. On a daily basis, I would need to clean, on average, 20-30 chains. When your doing that many, things WILL fail.

But they are messy no matter the condition. Spraying stuff all over the place.

For the casual user, they work, again just messy.

Price for the kit vs the proper chain pliers, power link and a tooth brush... Well thats a personal choice that I cant make for you.

I agree for a shop application, yes the chain plier/link way would be better given the volume of services. Not really smart for a shop to stock ridiculous amounts of degreaser just to run a trigger cleaner.

I am mainly coming from the view of a hobby rider who knows enough to clean and wrench on their bikes w/o checking into an LBS. To some, chain pliers might be something they just don't want to do. Understandable. I own 2 pairs myself.

The messy part is debatable. Honestly it's not anymore messy for me than it is to re-lube my chain---which isn't too bad at all. MacGuyver'ing it all you need is yesterday's newspaper under your rear tire. The splatter doesn't happen any other direction(for me at least) other than what drips out of the box. The chain dries quick enough to only need 1 wipe down. Dump the box out on it and since it's aerosol based, it dries quickly. Throw the paper away and re-lube.

I break chains all the time. Was riding 30 miles a day to and from work (15 each way) - I beat up the roads and trails. Clean the bike once a week. For some its a way of life.

Yessir, love this stuff. I have used nothing else for chains for decades....or whenever this stuff first showed up.

    agreed

yep, nothing else required. Never had any chain issues.

I have embraced the use of master links again since these made the scene. They do make removing the chain for extensive cleanings you have described much more practical......even tho I will still just do the clean ride stuff and a rag most of the time.

The beauty of cleaning is there is really only 1 way to do it, that is, get it clean. How you approach the solution is not important. As long as the desired result is reached.
