Yea my local shops would not budge on their prices by even a dollar so I ended up driving 2 hours south to Dallas to find my bike from clist.

Bike shops usually don't budge on prices (I also have experienced this) this is because the slight amount of markup on prices that put on the bikes. Usually bike shops give you a year of free maintenance in return from by a bike from them.

The only time I have gotten a break on prices was when my cycling team was sponsored by a local bike shop and I got market price.

Personally I will contuinue to support my local bike shops.

What about asking them to toss in some accessories or maybe a bigger discount on a more expensive item? Sometimes there's more than one way to skin a cat :D

not the best picture. I love my GT hard tail. its not a very expensive brand (got it for 450 i think) but it does everything i need it to. hard down hill courses and just nice trail riding. i tried a soft tail jamis dakar and i ate more trees then on my 2 stroke ktm in the woods. too much suspension.

I read a recent review (within last 6 months I think, Mountain Bike Action) and it got good reviews. It would be a heavy bike for trail use and I think its popular for dual slalom and slopestyle.

When you say slip, do you mean the chain skips but stays on? or does it come off completely?

There are a few things that play a role in your situation, depending on the scenario. Chain could be old and strecthed, Chain rings and or rear cassette worn out, front and or rear derailer need adjustment.

hmm, where is it skipping from? the chainring or rear cassette?

I'd get it looked at by a shop either way. It's shouldn't skip at all regardless of what your doing (assuming you have a decent drivetrain).

It sounds like it could be chain alignment. This is an adjustment you can learn to do yourself. It's made easier if you can get the bike onto a stand to adjust the derailleurs. There are any number of videos on how to adjust your derailleurs if you want to do it yourself.

If you're going to go the self adjusting route and it's been a year or more or you're riding a lot, you might also want to replace the cables.

Some bike shops offer low cost maintenance classes where they'll go over the details of a basic tuneup--some do it for free and others charge a small amount. It helps to ask around at the higher end shops.
