Between a busy week, a wedding and now this damn weather, Ive only had one mediocre at best trail day in two weeks. I'm going through some serious withdraws.

I looked back at the first page and you are right. Some big differences since March 2009.

So i am trying to get into the sport and was looking for a good deal, i found what i think are good bikes but i am not sure on the price if the price is fair or not. The first is a 2012 sortie diamondback
    image.jpg
image.jpg Seller is asking 1300 for it
The second one is a giant not sure what year or model

Any advice would be great since it is a good chunk of change.

It's a Giant Stance, not sure what level or year. That Diamondback is going to be heavier than the Stance. What type of riding are you looking into doing? Try riding both of them if you can, but I'd venture a guess that the Stance will be the better choice.

My input, as someone who also just started getting into the sport, is to first decide on what your going to ride? I went with an All-Mountain bike (specialized pitch) from craigslist for $500 because this was all the more i was willing to spare to see if MTB is what I'm interested in. If you have 1200 to throw away then more power to you.

spend time looking at reviews, models, and other selling prices. And when you do buy one, take this lesson i learned the hard way. Make sure all bolts are TIGHTENED to spec before taking it on a trip.

I went with a Wolftooth NW 32T and love it. I also went with Shimano's SLX M675 clutch style derailleur to keep my chain where its supposed to be. Or, buy a chain guide and you should be ok.

I've also heard that you should shorten your chain to minimize chain slap and potential derailments.

    I'm no mechanic but that's my $.02.

interesting, my friend told me i'd need a new derailleur but didnt mention the chain guide instead. hmm. Ill probably snag a wolftooth 32t since it has high ratings and recommendation.

I have a few freinds that ride trails but more on asphalt than dirt but i would like to venture out and do mtb trails not just asphalt, or street. I looked at brand new bikes but those are way out of my budget.

Your friend is correct. The issue of just removing the front derailleur and not chain guide when you convert from 3x to 1x is that as you ride, there's tension on the rear derailleur as you are bouncing around on the trail and the chain can fall off. With dedicated 1X drive train, they are designed from the chain and chain ring to the rear derailleur to apply enough tension so the chain doesn't fall out the chain ring. With your 3X setup.... remember the time you hit a bump and the middle chain ring would jump to the smallest chain ring or from smallest chain ring to landing on to the bike frame? 1X is designed...you can over kill it by using a chain guide and force it to stay on, but then you add more friction in your drive train.

This is why the 1X rear derailleur have a thing called clutch.

Far as which chain ring works... check with what crank set you have...does the new chain ring support the mounting holes of the spider? 1X chain ring are designed with 1X chain set and the entry and exit from chain to ring and to hold on. You going to a 1x9 either your trails are very flat...or you are a strong climber... just be aware of that.
