Well....events suddenly got bumped up. I popped down to one of my local shops....and the dude must've been in a REAL good mood. One of the new bikes I had my eye on, he dropped 250 bucks off the sticker price. Between that, and the 300 I had for my old one. I basically paid $550 Cdn for this brand new Scott Aspect 930.
It'll be perfect for the riding I'm planning to do. Mostly average, to moderate trails. Fairly thick brush, but nicely defined paths. Heavy with roots and dips. Nothing too intense, at this point. I'm still a roady at heart. But I do like off-road, and trails. And it's a HELL of a workout. This will only make me a better and stronger rider - for both types.

What about the plastic guard thing between cassette and spokes? That'll need to go too. :D

Haha....I wondered about that little piece, and if it's really necessary. Newb alert!!

It's only necessary when you need it, otherwise it's unnecessary. I've always taken them off. They look silly, make noise, break anyway. They are the mark of a clear MTB newb.

OTOH that one time you drive your chain or derailleur into your spokes you realize it does have a reason for existing.

This is what it prevents and any mountain biker who has not experienced this is either (1) just starting out or (b) lying. Usually happens at the farthest point from the truck possible. The problem is in my experience that when the chain jams between the hub and cassette it usually just breaks that plastic deal into 3 parts anyway, so you still have a jammed chain but now there's a half a plastic disc cutting your fingers.

My wife is a supporter of my sports. Thankfully. But it's still a delicate balance.....as soon as she spots me looking shit up on the interwebs. She can sense that I'm eyeing up new toys. haha

Mine is a support too and we ride a lot together I think she is a little upset that she didn't get a full squish bike first.

Hardly new and not lying. Never happened to me anywhere other than at the house working on a bike. I am OCD about my bikes being dialed in so no, never has happened on the trail. One of those little screws on the rr derailleur has everything to do with it not happening. Correct adjustment of said screw prevents this. Know your bike & how to take care of it. When you don't, shit happens.

I had to take the stupid plastic thing off my second bike. It caused problems almost immediately after getting the bike. Luckily, I was still right in front of my house. First and last time I had that problem as my third bike didn't have one from the factory.

You are the The One. ;-)

    IMG_0580.jpg

I'll just say it's happened to lots of people eventually. Chain issues even happen to pros. At Hoogerheide in 2013 chain issues cost Kevin Pauwels the World Cup title to Niels Albert. That is the highest level of racing, European cyclocross and Belgian teams. His mechanic, Bart Risbourg, is highly respected and very good at what he does. Sometimes things just happen and it was weather in that case.

The reason I usually see it is bent derailleurs. All the adjusting of the stop screws can't help when a rock jumps out, set on messing up all your work.

I was 6 miles from my car when I broke a derailleur. I was able to piece it together enough so I had at least one gear. Luckily for me, it happened right as we were starting to head down.

I've had the chain drop behind the cassette but luckily it never jammed. Nothing a good adjustment won't solve. I recently had the chain jam between the chainring and the bottom bracket on the wife's bike and that wasn't fun at all

I'm the one who doesn't ride places where rocks have legs.:D Bent derailleurs go in trash, not headed for trails.

I has simples too but simple just doesn't cut it everywhere :(
