Why not? I never use the first or third gear...ever. Are there really any downsides? There are no mountains anywhere close to where i live either...

Yeah even when I ride in NC in the mountains I never use 1 or 3 on the front... Hell I would be happy with just like 4-6 speeds

i never used first either but once i got to steeper climbs and more technical sections i started using first more. i feel like it gives me more control expecially at slower speeds which its pretty much for. haha

im also thinking about going with a 9 speed soon too since i think my cassette is done. i would go 2x10 but i dont think i want to spend that much on my hardtail

ZR - A couple things - first, if you are still looking for some riser bars to try (though it looks like you have some in your stem pic), I have a set of 2010 holzfeller 30mm risers that I just pulled off a bike, in the black/red.

Also, I have been running 1x9 on my bikes for the past 4 or 5 years here in the DFW metroplex. While I am not in the best of shape, I dont find the gearing limiting too much on climbing, and I like the weight loss and simplicity on the bike. Its worth a try, and if you dont like it, its fairly easy to put the stuff back on.

Good looking bike, RAD, but one caution - Run that fork at 120mm or so. The bike is an XC bike designed around 100mm of travel. Most MFG's will allow 1" of travel longer and maintain warranty, but above that and they will deny, as it is on you with the longer fork.

You also may find that it rides better, as it was designed around a lower front end. And if you need it, here is the page with the specs and a geometry chart on the right hand side: http://khsbicycles.com/03_xc_204_09.htm

Love the Sector RL (solo air) I have, a great fork. Plus you get the Specialized owned FSR (Horst link) suspension on the frame, which I enjoy as well... Enjoy the ride!

^^^^wow amazing vid. Just got back from Moab and Fruita last month which was amazing, but I'd love to taste some ultra techy north shore type stuff. Anybody up for a Whistler meet?

thanks for posting William. What part of Nebraska do ya hail from?

    most def check the specs....

my Santa Cruz Superlight is the same way.

quote from their site about fork setup

"100-120mm will work great, depending on what you want the bike to do. 100mm forks will give the bike quick handling, and classic 71/73 degree angles. 120mm forks will make the bike more stable at speed and are better for slightly more aggressive riders. 120mm is the largest you can use and not void your warranty. If you really want to use a 130mm or longer fork, you should be on a Blur LT or Heckler. "

    i run a 100mm SID Race

Thanks for the info. Ive got a friend down in the DFW area and he is the one that initially told me about 1x9. He just built a cove stiffee 1x9.

Do you know if you can use the same crank and just ditch 2 of the cogs or is it better to just get like a bmx crank?

its a 10 mile loop (its only on the Morris Bridge side, the one with all the trails not the main loop), typically people do like 5-6 loops over the 6 hour period (I did 5 laps the year I did it

Whistler to ride the bike park, or to ride out on the shore? Bike park is a blast, even for inexperienced riders, just stay on the lower half of the mountain.

Shore, I would be a bit more hesitant about, if you dont know exactly how you can handle it.

Generally, yes, you can use the same cranks/chain rings. Most will go to a non-ramped ring up front to prevent the chain from wanting to move, but you can run it either way.

Not really. Its a 7 year old bike. I would probably consider it a good deal at $250, decent at $300

This is what I would expect at the $4-500 range:
