2010 is old. Around 2014/2015 SRAM really invested some time in their new brakes and made them competitive with Shimano. The old stuff is just clunky and proprietary. No need for new rotors. Check out PinkBike for solid used deals. I wouldn't go any less quality than Deore, therefore Deore, XT, Zee, Saint, and XTR (priced respectively) are all excellent.

Sweet. Thanks for the info. I'll look around for a different set up. It will be nice to have something that works the same one ride to the next and even from beginning to end of a ride.

Brake technology has come a long way in the past 5 years or so. You will be pleased

Sram is lightyears ahead of where Shimano used to be. Sure Shimano used to be the gold standard, but they haven't made a single improvement in over half a decade. I have a bike with a Sram XX1 eagle set up, its a fucking work of art compared to XTR.

Hmmm. That's interested. I've been looking around at some brakes onine to replace my 7 year old avids. What are some of the specific differences from Sram and Shimano?

I was just talking about drivetrain. Sram and Shimano are still pretty equal on the brake front. Depends what kind of riding you do and how much you want to spend. I have Sram Guide Ultimates but they're pretty comparable to trail set of XTR's. If you ride DH then its between the new codes and saints. I like the Saints but haven't tried out the new codes.

biggest diff is shimano uses mineral oil for fluid. so does magura. that and lever feel is awesome on shimano.
in fact this very thread reminded me my fatbike has avids that work, but I hate them and know they are
gonna go tits up, so I already have ordered a set of shimanos to just replace my working avids now.
before I get boned on the trail by an avid issue

Avid was purchased by Sram in 2004... they're one and the same. Also I really like Srams new bleeding kit. Really simple and its the same fitting I use on my dropper too. Really haven't been a Sram fanboy until the last year, they're doing a lot elevate their products.. just saying

Fwiw I don't really like my sram level t brakes. I realize they are the low end of sram. They are better than the Hayes stroker rides that were on my 09 trance, but I really don't like the levers. They are probably the first part I'm going to replace when I get around to replacing parts on my Bronson.

    Thanks @ATR55 @127.0.0.1 @drwx
That's helpful info. I'm not in need of XTR or the SRAM equivalent of that. One level lower will probably be good. I ride a hard tail SS so mostly XC riding I guess. Not a big down hiller. I found a decent read from 2016 comparing the two here: http://www.mtbiking.com.au/gear/shimano-xt-vs-sram-guide-brakes
Just looking at XT brakes on eBay and pink bike, they're not much less than buying new from Jenson or Nashbar

No problem. Biggest question is what's your budget? You're most likely going to be happy with XT or guide rsc. There are other options but they are more expensive

I probably don't want to go over $200 or so. XTR and the SRAM equivalent seem to run about double. I can't justify the cost for my use as I don't race or anything. I'm just a weekend warrior

See if you can find some xt's for that price then. I think they're more like 125$ per wheel but you'll be happy

Built mine back in 06, still is 11ty times more capable than I am. Even with uncool 26" wheels. I tried the 29er thing back in the day, I missed the BMX'esque feel. If I need a new bike one day, I'll give it another shot.
