Just got my first bike since i was in my early teens. took a few minutes to shake off the cobwebs. the phrase "like riding a bike" holds true, almost 20 years later i still know how.

Which chromag is that? I've been thinking about getting a hardtail as well and have been leaning heavy in thier direction. Not sure which model though between the surface, rootdown and primer.

that surface ti is a fucking work of art. I would think about just buying the frame, but $3,100 just for an asain frame? even ti that seems pretty steep

    Looking for some input/thoughts etc...
I've been considering getting a mountain bike, something to kinda get into it and see if I'll dig it or not.. Something that isn't outrageously priced, but also not crap.
I came across these two below at REI.. What do you all think, opinions?

    Random Vids.

    REI has a Ghost Kato FS 5, 27.5 Reg. 2,699. Clearance 1,888.

    Ghost Kato FS 3, 27.5~ Reg. 1,999. Clearance 1,398.

The Ghost line is pretty legit. I'd also recommend checking KSL, Craigslist, etc for a used bike. You can generally get some decent deals and A LOT more bike if you hunt a little bit. This time of year is prime used bike selling / store clearance season.

If you are truly on a budget, I would look at mid-range hardtails, which could be spec'ed pretty sweet for the same price as a low end full sus. bike. Norco Torrent / SC Chameleon / Kona Explosif come to mind.

    Thanks..

Where would the two bikes I posted sit, Maybe kinda midrange entry or better? Also another good thing about REI, I'd have a year to try it out, and if I didn't like it could return it for a full refund.

I'd stay away from ghost. mostly because the geometry is really outdated. Besides that, you might want to consider picking up a hardtail. Full suspension bikes can be tricky to learn if you're just getting back on a bike for the first time in a while. that being said, I have no idea what your experience level is. So if you are pretty bike savy and you still want to get on a full suspension, I'd recommend looking up a Marin. They are the bang up value leader for entry level, high quality bikes.

The really important things you should identify first are:

What kind of trails will I be ridding?? (most important, be realistic)
Where are my ridding skills presently at?

Once you know the answer to that stuff then you can pick the right bike for you and questions like the ones below will be narrowed down-

What kind of geometry will best suit me?
    What wheel size?
    How much travel?
    Drivetrain - 1x or 2x set ups

Also another thing to consider is where you buy the bike from. Private sellers wont help you with bike maintenance, where as your local bike shop, will help you keep your investment in tip top shape. A big chunk of enjoying a mtb experience is simply just keeping a bike in good, clean working order. Bikes need constant love to keep them silent on the trails. Just like our trucks :)

go back a couple pages to see :) I just recently got on a new Santa Cruz Hightower LT, XX1 build with reserve wheels.... that being said I would never recommend that someone who's just trying to get a feel for the sport seriously look at a bike like mine, even if $10K's just pocket change.
