FS if you want to ride longer distances on actual MTB terrain. I had both when I was racing (1997-2003): Litespeed Ocoee HT, SantaCruz Superlight FS - horses for courses, and I needed spare bike in case one was out of service. When I quit racing, I sold the Superlight and just badassed the rough stuff with the hardtail. However, I eventually settled on the Heckler in my previous post because my back was not really able to handle the abuse of recreational riding once I stopped daily training. I'm over 50 now, so it's full squishy forever, until I can't ride trails any longer. I still have a hardtail, but it's more of a city/gravel/randonneur style ride that I wouldn't use for more than a couple of miles on the trail.

If I could only have one, it would be my fat bike.

    Thanks for the input.

This mountain bike thing is a whole other world of learning new lingo, and whats good and whats not..
I see the benefit of finding a nice used one that has been geared out, compared to buying new and losing as soon as you roll it out (which really for the most part is with anything)... However one reason I'd started to consider one of the bikes I posted, was bc both are at REI and you have a year to return anything from there.. So a year to decide whether it's for me or not, then if so learn more about what's good etc.. Then potentially take it back and get what fits my wants/needs best later..

Seems like a lot of different companies out there, and a lot of varying opinions due to what/where people like to ride etc. Lot to take in when trying to get into it to start.

One of the reasons a lbs is awesome. Try out different options that are already working in the area you live.

Got out for a great ride this morning. Weather was perfect....probably the last set of nice days before it gets colder. Also sold my green FSR to a buddy as I just got into my 6fattie.

According to the YouTube videos I’ve seen of whistler......I’d have to totally agree with you....I wanna make a trip there at some point.

Fairly sure it's not Whistler. But yes, the riding in BC is amazing :)

I agee that this is a great province! We live close to Sun Peaks Ski resort, it’s the 2nd biggest resort in Canada after whistler. That’s where the picture was taken.
Lots of great riding in the States, we hit the NW Cup for racing in Washington, Sea Otter for Dual Slalom, Vegas for Bootleg DH racing in January - great break from the snow and cold here. Did a trip to Moab last fall with my buddies, amazing scenery

Moab is awesome and brutal. I wanna go again.

I need to get some pics or video of Coler MTB Preserve here in this tiny corner of Arkansas. They've done an amazing job filling it with bike park style flow trails with good progression from blue to black to double black. Still working on clearing all the jumps on the easy trail before I move to the blacks, but what a hoot. If you can clear the jumps, it's so smooth, great flow. Last run today was good but more work to do . . .

Thats the thing with mountain biking, so many good places to ride, pretty much every place has some good trails, just need someone local to show you where the good ones are.

Hard tail for me cause I am a old school guy. Hard Tails have less components to mess with too.
I ride faster on hard tails unless it's a down hill race only then do I think full suspension is needed.
