My advice would be to get one that fits most importantly. Once you do, ride to see if you get into it. If you do, resist the urge to upgrade a cheaper bike and just get what you want. So often in the beginning I put money into a cheap bike that resulted in nothing in return. Would have been much further ahead to just buy something else. Unfortunately, anymore, bikes basically start at $2500. If you're into it, you won't think twice about spending that.

I found my dirt jumper on Pink Bike. Just post a link of what you like and you will get some good advice.
Biggest thing is getting the right size back for you. Nothing too small or too big. Just right.

Pinkbike is all I use for buying/selling bikes. Plus, any bike over $1000 is just hard to sell locally, depending on where you live. I just sold my 6th bike on there yesterday, it went in 2 days!

Just mounted up the Rocky Mounts Switchhitter to the the CBI bars, trying to get things dialed for Moab and Gooseberry in a couple of weeks. It's a brand new setup for me, I've always ran either a tailgate pad or hitch rack. We plan on running Top of The World and Hell's Revenge with bikes loaded up so we'll see how it all holds up. Anyone running this rack and do some offroading with it?

I just ordered those.. What bike rack did you go with to mount? CBI told me rhino fits well but I'm also worried about security

Old Red is still kickin. Needs a new derailleur. Bought new in 94. M2 metal matrix frame. It’s been everywhere. Great trail bike. Bought when I used to live in ATL. Used to love going up to Tsali.

take a book, pencil and measuring tape to a wall in your house, I like behind a door on a hard floor... carpet messes with things.

Standing up straight, with bare feet put your heels butt and back against the wall. Slide the book up between your legs till you hit your boys/taint. Holding the book scribe a line where the top of the book hits the wall. Measure from the ground to your line.

This is your stand over. What is this value?

    also check ebay.

It's the Rocky Mounts Switchhitter. The one thing I'm bummed about is the way it fits, I lost the ability to lock the rack to the bars on the driver side of the truck. This is because you have to bolt CBI's brackets to the bars and then the rack to the brackets. And because of where the bolts in rack line up with the bracket, the thru axle is totally blocked by the bed bar. There's another hole by the fork mount that you can use which will shift the rack forward (what I did), but that hole is for the lock. It can be resolved by mounting the bike on the passenger side, so I'm going to call CBI and swap the brackets out. Only thing is that if I ever want to run bikes on both sides of the truck then I'm SOL. I can get some photos of what I'm talking about.

You rode that tank at Tsali? Tsali is too smooth and fast of a trail to ride that old tank. :boink:

For $500 or under just go used. Apart from local classifieds, mtbr classifieds or pinkbike buysell would be another place to look although majority of bikes there will be $2k+ as those are enthusiast sites. Imho about $600 would be a good minimum for a new hard tail bike to start.

Maybe something like the Vitus Nucleus for $640 shipped with brokerage fees included if at all possible? Adjustable air forks, basic hydraulic brakes, decent wheels and tires for the price, more relevant or modern geo compared to most bikes in this price range etc. etc. Most importantly make sure you get the right size.

Hard to beat a <26lb hard tail that will not fold in half on you for $300.

    :notsure:

yeah, there is some nostalgia to them, but ask anyone that's had or has an M2 frame... it goes way beyond a harking to old times. The frames are just that good.

$300 is the starting bid. And finding parts that'll work on a bike that's 25 years old has to be a giant hassle.
