Simplest explanation: it's a commercial. If they have to use xs bikes and camera magic, so be it. Marketing people tend to not get a lot of things right in whatever your sport is too, hence the reflectors and dork disks.

A really funny one is Degree Deodorant's Bear Grylls rock climbing "Tombstone" in Moab using 15 feet of janky Walmart rope. @1:53 in the vid you can see him drag it behind him as he tops out. If you look closely, you can see he is actually toproping too, while faking trad...

All that said, there are some trails in Utah that I've kicked on 4wd (high) to get up the fireroad (Crybaby Hill pre-graded, Smithsonian Butte when it was super muddy, another secret trail I refuse to share) but its pretty rare. Usually if I have to do that, I am dicking around and taking all the OHV trails to get to the parking lot!

Seems like most of 27.5 plus bikes come with 2.8 tires on 35-40mm rims and almost always forks are not specifically marked as 27.5+ in the spec sheet. Talking mostly about Recon, new Revelation RC, Yari and in some cases Lyric, Fox 34 etc. So are these most likely 29er boost forks if not labeled as 27.5+?

Does anyone know which forks are compatible? Safe to get any 29er boost fork then? Considering building up a 27.5+ bike with 2.8s on 35-40 ID rims, but want to have appropriate forks, something a bike brand would spec on one of their bikes if that makes sense, not looking for forks that will just work by luck with millimeters of clearance left.

I've been in a similar pickle. I'd say google-fu can tell you a lot, or call the manufacturer to ask.

    OR

Look at plus bikes on the market, see what forks they use, and there is your answer.

That was actually my point, can't tell if it is 29er or 27.5, 27.5+ model of the fork when looking at complete bikes. They usually don't list that, so still confused what to look for. Seems like 29er boost is a safe bet.

My KONA process 111 s a 29er. I found a mtb magazine article about how people have swapped them to a 27.5+ setup on 2.8. It recommended no more than a ID of 30 mm rims. This build intrigued me s the hunt was on for a frame. I found one on pink bike with a rock shock revelation fork. As far as I know it’s just a wheel swap and not a fork swap. My front hub spacing is 15x100. I put pics of my bike back a few pages ago....I LOVE IT!!!

Here's what I ended up doing with my setup. I ordered the passenger side brackets but once I got them in and mounted I realized the the brake caliper was now being blocked by the bed bar. DOH! Didn't even think of that. So after contemplating, I decided to use the passenger side bracket on the driver side and drill some new holes to push the thru axel further back. The rear wheel overhangs off the back some, especially since I ride a 29er with a fairly long wheelbase, but at least I have full locking capabilities now.

You figure out what you're going to do yet?

Bikes can definitely be gendered- typically womens bikes have shorter top tubes, and sometimes have narrower bars and grips, along with a few other minor adjustments... and colors... but at that price level they typically aren't very different (ie just color)

That Meta on CL while a few hundred more gives you A LOT more bike, with a lot of room to "grow" (skills wise) into it and still enjoy it.

Let’s be more specific: bikes are marketed towards different genders, absolutely. Giant does it with their Liv brand, Santa Cruz with Juliana, etc. Color is a cultural thing, and used effectively in marketing as well to make something seem female/male/etc. If someone is more comfy buying a bike marketed towards a male/female, awesome. If it feels like it fits better, great!

However, short of difference in seats, top tube lengths and bar widths are the same issues for men of different sizes. I ride with a half dozen females using 780mm bars with no issues. Not sure your comment on grips?

My more important point is this: if I found a great deal on a bike that was marketed to a different gender, but it fit and felt correct, I’d be silly not to consider it.

Absolutely- if it fits... ride it who cares --- but technically gendered. The more expensive the bike, the more likely there are frame adjustments, but as you said there are many body types and sizes that that dont fit with the stereo typical "gendered" bike (ie a really short dude might fit much better on a "womens" bike and a really tall women is far more likely to fit better on a larger mens bike)

As for the grips there are a few companies that have put out bars/grips with a smaller diameter... PIA from a bike shop standpoint as its impossible to find replacements- this is pretty rare though. Haven't come across it in a while.

One of my friends couldn't get a Yeti frame to fit him right. He rocks a bright pink Yeti Beti now that fits much better, and shreds everything with it!
