Took a couple of my 26ers out for a spin on mtb/campin trip with one of my twin girls.............these bikes have never been to this place so it was only fair.

 

Been strongly considering a new bike and came here for some recommendations. Currently on a stock '16 Trek Marlin 7. Bought it as a beginner bike with light trail riding in mind, ended up getting into tougher trails the bike wasn't really made for and abused it a good amount over the last few years. Shifting is really rough, I looked into upgrading it but rather than fall into a pit I figure it would be cheaper in the long run to step up to a better bike, and one that is more suited to how I ride it.

I'm not too educated on the level of components so I'm a bit overwhelmed looking at new bikes. I want something with a 1x drivetrain and (ideally) tubeless ready. I've seen a couple bikes I liked but I'm not sure how I'd like moving to a 27.5 after being used to the 29ers.

Any help or advice appreciated

If you want to stick with a hardtail, a step up to a Procaliber 6 would likely be the most affordable upgrade. Much better fork. Personally, I've gone all Plus, and I think a Stache would be a great hardtail for desert terrain. I love mine, but you might not be big on the plus tires. It's the next best thing to full suspension, though, and the short chainstays of the Stache make for a fun bike. The Roscoe is similar but has 27.5+ wheels. But for a standard 29er upgrade, the Procaliber is what you should check out.

If you are looking to go full suspension, you can't go wrong with the Fuel EX like @jeff b points out. I have the 27.5+ as well, which is close to a standard 29er. You can also get the Fuel EX in a 29er, basically the same bike but I think the fork has 10mm less travel than the + bike. The Fuel EX8 27.5+ is my favorite bike ever, I've only upgraded the brakes to XT level and swapped on a carbon handlebar. It rips and has very neutral handling -- I immediately felt comfortable on it. I had one, sold it and got a Remedy, then sold the Remedy and went back to the Fuel EX.

 

I want to stick with a hardtail. I really wanted a Stache when I first bought my bike but I was just getting back into riding and didn't want to drop that much with no idea how much I would even ride it.

Definitely interested in the plus wheel sizes and considered the 27.5 for more availability. Particularly in frame size since 17.5 isn't as common with the 29ers.

See if you can test ride a Stache. Most Trek shops will let you rent and credit you the rental cost toward purchase. I wouldn't recommend anything lower than the Stache 7 so you get a much better fork (Yari). They have a good size range, so you may want to have them fit you to the right size. If you ride a 17.5, you may find an 18.5 fits you better, but they have it in 17.5 as well. I am 5'11" and ride a L (19.5).

If that is out of your price range, try a Roscoe 8. Similar spec on components, and a great value for the money.

 

Score! Nice. If a cop gets you for that, there are other things going on. I would not sweat that. Cops are busy these days and that would have to be one just having a bad day. Here in NY the 3M decal that makes up the plate image is peeling or getting stained marks. I was able to score a second set. In that case I would add it.

I ride a scout. Love it, but wish I got a patrol for the increased rear travel. But it is so much fun it’s hard to justify selling

 

I want a scout sooo bad. Or sentinal. I have a tr500 and a triple, but my enduro bike is on the cheap end of bikes. I bought a newer and nicer truck instead of a cheaper one with a new bike. Oh well.
