In that sub 2k price range you can check these out:
    https://m.pinkbike.com/news/field-trip-sub-2000-trail-bike-round-table.html

the Kona honzo comes in 29 or 27.5+ like the roscoe.

another similar option is the salsa timber jack. I’m really liking the SLX build on that bike. The fork doesn’t look as good as the roscoe but in my opinion everything else on par or better on the timber jack slx 27.5+. The timber jack also has replaceable dropouts so You can run pretty much any wheel with the change of the dropouts.

you can also checkout hardtail party on YouTube. He does some solid reviews of a bunch of hard tails

Trek has the 2019 Stache 7 listed on their site as $50 more than the Roscoe 8. They only have size small online, but if you could find a dealer that has the size you need, that would be a good deal.

Also take a look at the Santa Cruz Chameleon. The aluminum D build is $1800.

The Specialized Fuse is another hard tail to checkout that has a bunch of different build options between $1250 and $2150.

I got my son the 7 this year from my LBS. they do a great deal. I was happily surprised with the bike. If I were to buy either I would go with the 8. No need to upgrade and you can keep it as your hardtail forever. When it comes to upgrading the rear wheel will be the pain in the ass to upgrade. I actually think I am going to get an 8 at the end of the season to replace my old xcal.

Not to say you should try bartering with the LBS. but he will probably come off just a touch. Don’t be pushy though. If it is your local shop they will be the first place you turn with problems as well as upgrades and supplies. In short, Keep them in business. Don’t nickel and dime them. The 8 is worth the money for the upgrades. Like the other guys said. There are a lot of bikes in that range that are great but having a local dealer makes a big difference if you ever need warranty work and buying from them they usually do a deal for maintenance on the first year. Good luck.

Where in SC are you? I’m eagerly awaiting DuPont and Paris mtn to open back up. Tired of gravel and road rides

image.jpg Well 20 or so shops later, finally found my Roscoe 7. Can’t wait to take it out for a good long ride. Not really one to upgrade things off the bat. But always good to hear opinions etc, especially what to get or have around.
    Already went tubeless of course.

It’s hard to tell from the pick but those pedals don’t look super grippy. I would say pedals and call it a day until you decide if anything needs changing. Even then you can see how the pedals feel before changing them

Another vote for new pedals. The Race Face Chester is popular and not too expensive. Searching shows a $35 option and $50 option. I'd go for the $50 option with the replaceable pins. If you want to go with an all metal pedal, the Crank Brothers Stamp 2 is not too much more money. I have a set of those and don't have any complaints.

Otherwise, if you don't already have them a multi-tool, tire levers, spare tube, and a compact pump or co2 inflator are good to have to carry with you for emergencies. Then just ride it and have fun.

Good point on the tools and spares! Somewhere to put them too, whether on the frame or a pack depending on preference

My friend was throwing this Pro-Flex away, so I rebuilt it and have been riding it for 10+ years.

Are there some national forest trail systems by you? I drive through that area for work but have never explored for cycling.
Those bikes used to be the bees knees when I was growing up, those and Klein bikes

Nothing in Camden, but you have some trails in Poinsett and Harbison “near by”
