See, the problem was.............gotta know your limits AND your bike's limits. Exceeding either and especially both will never end well. It's a timeless law. Century change and equipment advances matter not.

I cheated today. I decided to rent a Levo Turbo eMTB for the day and i'm blown away. I had to see what all the fuss was about and I can totally see why people buy them. I felt like a rock star tearing it up.

I can't look at my Surly the same now

I looked today. Only because a couple went rocking by yesterday. They had a pair of eMTB. My LBS has been a big proponent. I get it now.

Im looking to get into mtb. I've been looking at a salsa timberjack xt or slx. Based on price and suggestions from a friend thats been riding for a while.

Im not completely new to bikes, but am a novice at best when it comes to mountain biking.

Any suggestions comparable to the salsa timberjack? Nothing more than 2k. Thanks!!

The XT build would be the better choice. Not crazy about the fork but then I've been on a Fox for a couple of bikes now. They also use more house branded parts too-no idea how to measure the quality but likely, no big deal.

The price is pretty attractive and at $2k, seems like a good deal.

I think the timber jack is a solid starter/mid level bike. There are a few others. trek makes the roscoe, specialized the fuse, and Kona the honzo/big honzo, all just to name a few. All good bikes, my only issue with that list is the roscoe since it uses a different rear hub standard. They are all good choices.

I have a salsa warbird gravel bike. I love it tbh. Their house components are average, definitely not bling but they do the job.

When I got started a couple years ago I debated on the Timberjack SLX and the Kona Honzo. After demoing both on a couple rides, I ended up with the Honzo based off of fit and geometry for myself. It felt better riding and was more comfortable to me. I would look at the Honzo as well. Prices are in the same range and so are components.

Thanks for feedback! Is the karate monkey on the same level as the bikes recommended?

What would you say are important features to consider?

Drive train? Bike geometry? Weight? Or at this level, is it really about whats most comfortable to my body and riding style?

The karate monkey is a solid bike. It’s a steel bike vs the others using aluminum.

I’d say fit and making sure it matches riding style are the most important. They are all similar bikes though so if they dont match your riding style then you’re looking at the wrong bikes. Geometry will play into the riding style, a good shop will make sure you’re picking the right bike for your goals though.

weights should all be similar for each bike. Same with drivetrain, they should all be near each other. The timber jack with XT is probably the best drivetrain you’ll find on that list though.

Geometry is going to matter for comfort. Definitely ride diff bikes to see what feels good to you. You want something that can be upgraded in the future so tapered headset, thru axles and 1X front drive train is important features which the salsa and Kona both have. Both also have an air fork up front which are on the same levels as each other. A Fox or Pike fork is better but that’s a diff price range and can always be acquired later with an upgrade as your skill set grows. Size and fit is really important. You don’t want to be reaching too far or be uncomfortable after a short ride
