I went from a 5010 (climbed awesome, mediocre descender) to a Bronson (mediocre everywhere), test rode a Hightower then a Megatower and 29ers are not for me. They are faster but too slow to change direction/speed. I demo'd an N4 on a whim thinking no way do I need 170mm of travel and I was utterly floored! It climbs better than the Bronson, not quite as good as the 5010, but descends better than anything I've ever ridden!

I mean, I've done some seriously big climbing days on the N4 just so I can get some epic descending in.. It's the Toyota Tacoma of Mountain Bikes :D

Got lucky and picked up a 2021 Orbea Occam H30 last week from JensonUSA. Pretty new to mountain biking, but i've been having a blast so far. Still a bunch of things I'm trying to learn.

Probably a flat repair trailside and frustrated and in a hurry to get rolling again. At least that’s the excuse I would be using. ;)

Yeah. Just the Montague Paratrooper folder. I mean the kids are riding non-suspension bikes. I just need to keep up, lol.

Question. I’ve obtained an old Gary Fisher Tassajara from about 2003. It’s in mint condition and never saw much use.

It has a heavy shock/fork on the front. Would it be possible to convert it to non-shock? And if so, any recommendations on parts? I’d like to reduce the weight and i straight up just don’t like the feel of the shock.

Replacement forks are easy assuming it's a standard tube. Though if you're starting with a hybrid/hardtail, odds are it's not a super light bike in the first place.

This is a screen shot I grabbed off google. It’s the same bike. Yeah, it’s heavy. That’s the biggest reason I’d like to get rid of the shock.

Sure, and old school shocks weigh a ton.

Here's the thing, though - if they still work I'm sure it's a perfectly excellent hardtail for bombing easy stuff. Going with a shock free tube might free up a little mass, but ultimately, it's a old steel frame 26er. It doesn't even have discs. By the time you slowly get rid of all the 'heavy' bits, it's a new bike.

Why not start with something with an AL frame in the first place? If you don't like the 'shock feel', are they adjustable?

youll want to find a suspension corrected fork for 80mm travel.
    Steer tube is a 1 1/8” thread less. (Non-tapered).

Your choices are slim these days, but a local bike shop could order you a steel replacement that would be a little lighter than the air shock on there now.

Another option is to scour eBay/Craigslist/etc for a White Brothers carbon fork from that era. You would save quite a bit of weight doing that. You may have to switch up to a disc brake up front depending on what you find.

i know how everybody mods around here, added an OME front fender. The old one fell off 50 years ago.
