The classic Smoke and Dart are still some of my favorites.
Other similar are WTB Velociraptors front/rear and Hutchinson On The Rocks for the rear.

cool. i see what the shop has...

as far as the helmet cams go, ive got a gopro and i love it! ive never used a contour but those are pretty sweet too. the only thing i dont like about them is they dont come with the waterproof case. ive used mine and needed it multiple times so its definitely a must for me. i think contour makes a case but im not sure

I think the WeirWolf and Wolverine seemed closer to the S&D to pick them over the Velociraptor. I may try them later ;)

yeah definetly go with the go pro over the contour. it can be used in many more ways, and also the contour gets way more wind noise than the gopro due to the case on the go pro. and if you watch videos from the contour and then from the go pro in the same definition, the go pro is usually better. not saying the contour is bad, just not as good as the go pro

alright so ive been thinking...ive got a 2011 trek wahoo and ive been tossing around the idea of getting an FS. I want something that is a good climber since a lot of the stuff i will ride around school is like hour or so climb to the top and then 8 minute descent(the fastest rider ive seen haha) it all will vary 1 hour climb is like the longest that i will probably see. i also plan on going to snowshoe and maybe diablo or whatever its called now so im thinking 150mm-160mm travel or so.

    ive been looking for:
    trek remedy
    trek ex series
    spec enduro
    santa cruz nomad/blur 4x?
    transition covert
    commencal meta 6

ive found all of them in my price range except a nomad which i doubt i will find. one thing i was wondering is by blur 4x do they mean like 4x racing? if so im guessing that wont be the best climber

im not really in a rush to get one but im just keeping my eyes out.

also do you think it would be worth keeping my wahoo? the stuff around my house doesnt have long climbs (<15minutes) so i kinda feel like it would be a good idea to sell my wahoo..what do you guys think?

I read a review of the 4x. Mike Ferrentino of Bike wrote it. One thing he commented on was the low BB and the fact it was a stable climber. Here's a copy of that article.

I have to say that I think the Nomad climbs better than the Blur LT. Never ridden a 4x.

I had to go back and look at that. I wouldn't think you'd want 4" either.

Anyone have thoughts on buying a frame and building it yourself? Do you save any $$$ doing it? Or is you're not a bike shop guy are you just wasting your time and getting ito a huge mess?

Ive built most of my bikes this way. You will need a couple specific bit tools. If its your first build, probably some patience but it will be a good learning experience. It can save you money, but if your like me you'll spend more on nice components and neglect some savings. Also if you do build it yourself there are plenty of write ups and videos on how to do each part.

Be alert and defensive...I've been hit twice now. The last one I was hit by a F250 commuting home from work, still dealing with shoulder injury.

Ive built a few bikes like this but as far as saving money probably not. Typically I have some old parts that I'm using or stealing off other bikes. I think Spesh does the best job on component bang for buck due to mega buying power. If your very selective and patient looking for sales and clearance deals then you can probably win out.

My road bike is a Litespeed. After I cracked my original frame, I got a sweet deal on a new one from Litespeed. I run full Shimano Ultegra in the drivetrain, Spinergy wheels, and every thing else (fork, seatpost, stem, & handlebars) is Easton 90 carbon stuff. I bought everything new, did not pay retail and built my new bike for around $2,300, includes frame. I added it up and retail would put me close to $5,000. Spinergy gave me the employee discount so I paid $365 for $800 pair of wheels. I got a "returned" Koobi saddle, and I shopped around all over the internet to find all of my Easton carbon components for over 50% off. The other catch is I did all of the work myself, which is part of the fun of doing a buildup.

I did the same thing with my Litespeed Unicoi mtn bike. It was a used frame on ebay; I stripped it down, sold the crap that came on it and rebuilt it with Spinergy, Koobi, Easton, and Thomson. Retail would be about $4,500 and I have around $2,000 in it.

By far, building your own is the best. You have complete control on what goes on your bike. Plus whenever I am in one of my 100 or 200 miler mountain bike races, I know how to fix my bike. I know when it is out of tune. You would be amazed at how many mtn bike/road bike riders cannot even change a flat.
