As everyone said building a bike is a good choice, if your balling on a budget you can save money by getting close out parts off some big online stores or hawkeye Chainlove or Bonktown for a deal.

Yea and I like to ride 2-3 days a week to work. Right now I'm waiting to figure out what frame to build next. Probably a Salsa Chile Con Crosso or another Cross Check.

Yeah there's a MTN bike I really want but its arouind $4k...So I was thinking of just getting the frame.

Living in ATL i've pretty much given up on road biking. If i wasn't moving out of here soon I probaly would have given up on biking altogether.

I think if you know what you want and it's not what's on the built bike, building is the way to go. Especially if you can afford the time to shop around for just the stuff you want at a good price.

Building also gives a sense of satisfaction you can't get from buying a built up bike and there's a lot in that.

I owned this Bontrager Race Lite, purchased during my years working at Trek Bicycles; it was stolen in CA.

Replaced with a Santa Cruz Superlight!

No regrets, minus the fact the thief needs to rot in bicycle hell! Loved that Race Lite!

^^Absolutely, start with the frame and add parts as you can. If you have the time, you can really find good bargains on what you want. Cambria and Price point have 20-30% off sales every now and then. I would wait for these and buy crap loads of stuff

Yes, I build bikes from the frame up.

Do I save money - no. But I do get higher quality parts, that I want on my bike, for about the same $$.

    Yeah.
I have a GoPro and am very happy with it. I like the chest mount view the best after trying different ways to capture video. Here's the latest I have (if you have good bandwidth, crank up the resolution):

    http://youtu.be/iBXM8qqHmLc

And here is one from back when I had an Iron Horse 7POINT7. I call this the Left Nut Cam:

    http://youtu.be/mzXm12efxUo

I have a few other videos out there as well. It's hard to judge actual quality through YouTube, but from what I hear the GoPro is a little better.

If you do other sports where a helmet-mounted camera would be better, the Contour is definitely sleeker.

I just configured my SC10 4x4 (1/10th scale RC trophy truck) to carry the GoPro, will have some cool in-truck video soon.:D

Converted to 1x9 today. I think I'm going to like it. I never used the smallest gears and I only used the top gears for a second hauling ass down hill on pavement.

    Yeah.
Yes, an e.13 DRS setup. That Iron Horse was nearly a downhill rig. Totem on the front, Fox DHX 5.0 Coil on the back. It was smooth as butter and super fast on the rough downhill stuff, but it was just overkill for the terrain around here. Chubb was the only trail worth riding it on, and even the downhill flow trail in Eureka Springs doesn't require that much travel. I do miss it at times, but my Fuel does nearly as well and is way easier to pedal up the hills. I sold it to a guy in Hawaii, so I am sure it is happier now.

Thanks for the input on cameras.
I was against the chest mount camera at first, I thought it was a little clumsy. But the image appears pretty stable. I imagine it is steadier than a helmet cam, taking head movement out of the equation. I may give it another look.
How is it to ride with? does it inhibit your (TenBeers) riding in any way?

    Yeah.
I use a Camelbak with a strap across my chest anyway, so I don't notice any difference at all with the chest mount. They say that the video is more "immersive" from that viewpoint, and I have to agree. The top or side of the helmet doesn't catch much of the bike or rider and is from a higher angle, so you don't get the sense of speed. Plus you have to watch for branches closely!

For the chest mount, you have to wear it high on your sternum to get the right angle. At first I was wearing it low at the bottom of my sternum. My massive pecs made the angle point down to much. :D I mean man-breasts.

I have the ATC9k from Oregon Scientific. I bought is specifically because it had the laser pointer and the LCD attached.. not to mention waterproof without any extra case. Also has GPS. Still would like a GoPro BUT you can't attach the LCD or the new wireless pack at the same time as the waterproof case. Makes it useless when you're trying to setup the shot and make sure you're aimed correctly before you hit that ride. ATC9k resolution is good (not as sharp as GoPro) but still does a great job. I skipped the Contour at the time simply due to the lack of LCD to ensure you got the shot while on the trail.
