I look forward to trying out my new Mallets. I have used eggbeaters for a long time on my Klein, but switched over to Time Control Z. I like the larger platform for mountain use. Especially when snowy/wet/ muddy out, they give me a larger target to shoot for if I ever need to re-engage.
With that being said, the eggbeater cleared mud pretty well.

The platforms are also nice for the quick around town rides when I have standard shoes or flip flops on.

If I were doing cross-country racing again and needed to shave some weight, I would put the eggbeaters back on again.

It's exactly as it sounds. How much your foot moves around when clipped in. Another way to phrase it is how attached your foot feels to the pedal.

The Shimano SPD feels very solid when you clip in while the Egg Beater feels "loose".

While it's true that CB's Mallet/Egg Beaters have more float than a Shimano's SPD, that's not necessarily a bad thing. The more locked in your foot is, the less movement is required to release your foot from the clip system. If the clip is improperly mounted (and the more locked in your foot is), it's possible to exaggerate movement in your knee which might not be a good thing. By the same token, the less locked your foot is, the harder it is to release it. Clipping in is easier or more difficult depending on your preference. In mountain biking especially, a little harder to release means your feet won't be popping out as often-that's the theory at least.

SPD or Egg Beater. Both are good systems and it boils down to mostly preference.

I need to find a system to test out before I buy one. I'm gonna check out my LBS in the next week or so and see if they have anything.

If you have bad knees like me, you will want a pedal with more float

    Im getting there......
Alternatively like the board idea someone suggested you can but a 2x8 in the notch at the front or back of the bedliner (about halfway up the bedsides so you can still fit more gear underneath and make your bike rack sturdier....
Ive got the am version its amazing!!!!!!!
