New guy here. I got the wheels now looking for some new tires. Just curious... why are like 80% of all you running 265/70/17 BFG ko2? That good of a tire?

    Pretty stock for now
I went with General Grabber AT2 because they are just as aggressive looking, they are cheaper, lighter, and came with a 60,000 miles warranty.

    Welcome to the Forum! :hattip:

BFG makes a really great tire. Likely more of these are on the road than any other type of tire. That alone says a lot for them. For me though, I feel they load up with clay and snow too much, and all the spinning in the world doesn't evacuate it. I have run many types of tires including the BFG. The new sidewall design is definitely better looking than the older versions.

I ran Goodyear Duratracs which are considered a Hybrid Mud & A/T tire, on my old 4Runner and it was leaps and bounds better in the snow. They were the perfect tires for me until they reached 30k miles then I couldn't trust them. I think they delaminated which caused every other side block to wear before the others resulting in very loud humming and vibrations. I think I got a bad batch though. Other guys have never experienced this.

I put Nitto Ridge Grapplers on my Taco and I won't look back. By far the best tire I've ever run. Great in every type of weather. At 10k miles I measured the tread wear. There is maybe a .5 mm of wear. I checked 3 times and then bought a digital caliper to be sure. Two of the tires measure no wear. I rotate every 5k miles. Guys in Florida say they will dry rot first before wearing out.

    Come and check them out.

Here are mine after 10k miles.

How are they in the winter vs the Duratracs. Wish they made ridge grapplers in 16's.

Well, so far our winter here in Maryland has been weak. We've seen some snow but nothing like I drove in on the Duratracs. The 4Runner though is a beast in the snow. Better weight distribution. I did get to test the Grapplers in about 3" of snow on my driveways which for me are the only testing grounds that matter. They were great. No slippage and the tires didn't even break traction. I tried both 4 Lo and 4 High and in both modes in my Sport didn't have a single problem.

Here are some pics. Pay attention to the curvature of the driveway, the height difference and the length from bottom to top. Not the best for snow. A front wheel drive car with dedicated snow tires was no match for 1" of snow. Pay attention also to how the space beteen the blocks are filled but not all the way. Obvious proof that these don't load up. That was a typical wet snowfall for us.

Question on tire / wheel weights. Seems many don’t recommend going much heavier then stock as the truck just doesn’t have the power for much larger tires. Yet in this thread there are some huge wheels! What’s the deal? I’m a noob with wheels and tires so sorry if this has been discussed.

Sure, heavier than OEM will add extra strain on the engine and transmission but you have to keep in mind, these trucks can tow a pretty good amount of weight. What happens though with larger than stock tires has more to do with how that affects the gearing. Unless your rock crawling or mud bogging, or stay at 34" or less these trucks are just fine. You could even push 35s but according to most, but your going to likely want to help reduce the effort required by changing the gearing. Other factors to consider are the width of the contact patch, the part of the tire that makes contact with the roadway, or terrain surface. Tread also plays an important roll. Wider mud terrain tires require more energy to roll than a skinnier dedicated street tire. All combined, you've got more weight, a change in gearing, and more rolling resistance working against you.

It's a slippery slope for sure.
