cmon bad call, but none taken. I've joined because my nephew is doing alot of heavy towing with his new to him 08 DC SB taco. the 1st time i saw his taco towing the kind of load some of you guys tow in here and couldn't believe my eyes:eek: so i've asked him questions and he directed me here too read all about it! now even i'm getting hooked on the taco! causing me to have dreams of me owning a taco too!

by the way i own a 05 tundra DC 4x4 and after seeing what you taco guys tow im reaserching alot about the taco now!

now back to the weight tag issue, i have one on my tundy and now have recommended my nephew get one also to be on the safe side and not worry about fines and insurance going up for a citation (it happened to me) since he tows his trail rig to uwharrie almost everytime he bolts something new onto that money pit.

    Hello all,

This is my first post and I think this thread is the right one to start with because it's about towing.
I have a 2011 Tacoma 4.0L Prerunner Double Cab with the towing package and we are going to be buying a trailer for camping.
it's a 2004 Trail Lite 26QHB It's 3329lbs empty plus 290lbs of LP-Gas and Water and whatever else we need to stuff in it. I hope to be under 5000lbs total. In fact if and when possible I will tow it without water and get that when I get to where I am going.
My question is other than a good trailer equalizer hitch and Brake Controller what have you done to your truck to make it better for towing large loads? I cant afford a TRD Supercharger so don't bother going there but maybe a TRD Cold Air Intake and a good header exhaust system like Doug Thorley or JBA? How about anything with the suspension?
By the way I live in AZ and we have lots of mountains. For example getting anywhere like Flagstaff is going to be 7000' and I'm at 1500' msl in Phoenix.
    Thanks for any advise.

    Cheers,
    Chris

For me the supercharger added power for towing but cut back my gas mileage big time with the trailer behind me. I know you can't afford one but I figured I would give you my review of it to ease your mind. The rest of the bolt in mods you mentioned will likely not help you in any noticeable way. Long tube headers would help get some more power but removing the back cats will likely void your remaining warranty.

I guess what I'm trying to say is you should tow with your truck stock, 5000 lbs should be doable, and if you find yourself short of power than maybe do long tubes. Don't expect any miracle amounts of power without forced induction. However, you may be even better off considering towing with a bigger truck if you find the tacoma over worked at altitude and you cannot afford forced induction, but that may not be an option for you.

    Do dents and scratches count?
Just get a good weight distribution / sway control hitch. And a decent brake controller. You will be fine with the weight. You wont be breaking any acceleration records. But you have more than enough power to get it down the road with that 4.0.

Thanks Sterdog and TugBoatTrash for the replies. I just know torque is more important than HP when it comes to towing something and since I live in AZ with mountains surrounding us I thought if I could push an extra 30 - 50 pounds of torque I would have less problems when it comes to being at a dead stop because of backed up traffic or an accident ahead etc.. and trying to start from a dead stop. I'll keep it stock and see how it goes. I have a equalizer hitch and I just bought a Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller.

I'll post a pick of the setup in a few weeks after I pick it up.

    Cheers,
    Chris

2014 Palomino Puma 23 Ft in Northern AZ. Went from 1250' to 8000'+ and back. I give lots of credit to TRD SC for torque, Ride Rite Airbags and Husky Centerline WDH for zero sway, zero impact from semi's passing in other direction and handling some pretty good hills (6% + up and down). And the Off Road Tow Package performed perfectly.

Was a little worried about this but truck handled it fine stayed in 4th for the whole trip did get down to 45 on a steep long hill but semis get down to 40 or so on this hill so I was not too concerned. 16 ft trailer (19ft total) trailer brakes. Dakar rear leafs. Car weighs around 3K.

Might just be me but I'd put the car back about 1.5 or 2 ft to center it on the trailer axles
