you take it up into the mountains? how does the truck handle it? curious as we are looking at one (smaller) for camping and to tow from sparks to sacramento for long weekends at the family's.

Tows better than I thought it would. We've taken it to Bodega Bay and it'll maintain 55-60mph coming back up 80 over the pass. We've also gone south to Walker and north to Susanville/eagle lake with no issues.

Sometimes it doesn't want to downshift but I've found if I lift off the throttle and then floor it it'll kick down a gear.

What trailer are you looking at?

not entirely sure to tell ya the truth, this will be purchased within the next year though. Been going through this thread as well as the camper thread and 3rd gen tow thread for different ones. would definitely like one that has the bunks in it and convertible dinette, a toilet/shower, and a separate bed for us. trying to aim for a loaded weight of 5k or less.

we were just out there last week trying to narrow down a place to live and browsed around the ones in the parking lot out at the outlets lol

my buddy just bought a 30 ft. TT that weighs 6,000 dry his 2016 double cab 4x4 silverado max tow weight is 7100 lbs.
I told him this camper is gonna be way over 75% of his max tow weight. He said the salesman said he will be fine:facepalm:

In all likelihood the salesman was correct but he will need to watch tongue weight and gross weight when it's loaded.

It is not any kind of law, just good sense which is in short supply here. that is why there is this thread.

Jeez, you guys make it sound like manufacturers are out there trying to purposely hurt people with inflated tow ratings. They are the ones playing it safe and your vehicle is 100% capable of 100% capacity. The 75/80% rule is generally directed at those who are towing full time.

Truth in that statement... As long as you have proper brakes on the trailer and it's all tuned well you can carry as much as the truck can carry without too much concern.

The photo below is around 4,500lb on the front axle, 5,500lb on the rear axle of the truck with 12,000lb over the trailer axles (dual 7,000lb axles). We were under the truck's GCVWR, barely over the GVWR (9,300 lbs, we were at 10,000 total). Everything was basically as close to the limit or just barely over. It handled great, we've had emergency braking situations and it handles great (need to have working trailer brakes). The only thing we really have to do is make sure the airbags are inflated to ~25psi. Otherwise the 10 year old springs tend to sag a little.

Also I'd argue they leave enough room to go 10-20% over the ratings. While not recommended, it's certainly possible. See the above for proof.
