I recently bought a 26ft Wildwood X-lite Travel trailer by Forest River. Weighs 4200# dry. I own a 2006 Sport Access Cab with factory towing package. Towed it from Ohio to the Gulf Coast with no special mods other then a prodigy brake controller and an equalizer hitch. Towed like a dream. My taco did great on the flats averaging 65-70mph on the flats. For the hills in Kentucky I would slow to about 55-60 going up. I was really worried after I bought the trailer having never towed anything bigger than a Uhaul trailer before but it wasnt bad at all. Looking forward to my family's cross country trip from Florida to Washington State at the end of Oct. I will post a picture of the set up once I hook it back up again.

Hey all... I'm really new to TW but it looks I've struck the motherload when it comes to towing experience!

I'm planning a trip to Padre island Natl. Seashore in TX and once there expect to be towing on the beach for 100+ mi. (allowed in TX). My rig's an '05 DC 4X4 SB TRD Sport w/tow, BFG ATs on 17" rims. I've got about 15,000 mi. of towing a 28' Keystone Passport Ultralite under my belt with no problems to date but could use any input available concerning "beach towing".

    Thanks for any advice!

Wildboar, I have lived in Corpus Christi for 47 of my 50 years and have been going to the beach for the same length of time. Towing on the the beach south of Malaquite (past the 4wd sign) is going to be very risky because the beach from there all the way to the Mansfield Cut is very treacherous. There are always numerous washouts, debris is everywhere so the risk of flats is always there. Depending on how the weather has been the beach can be all tore up or it can be in relatively good shape. There are no locals who will even think of towing a trailer that big south of the 4wd sign. Not recommended. If you do, don't say you were'nt warned.

Now on the rest of Padre Island, (depending on the weather we have had) the beach can be in quite good shape or it can be pretty bad with deep soft sand. In fact this is why I went to another taco instead of my big diesel trucks (well one of the reasons anyway, diesel costs a lot more than gas). A taco will tend to float on the sand rather than plowing through it...but not towing a huge trailer. On the parts of the beach that are maintained most of the time you will be able to get away with that. You will almost never see anyone with big trailers on the beach even in the well-maintained parts. If you get off in some deep sand you will definitely get that thing stuck hard. If you just have to give it a go, there are commercial outfits that will pull you out with a wrecker but let me tell ya, they will make it hurt (financially).

If you're interested in So. Padre Island, there are almost no open beaches there anymore (close to Port Isabel anyway.) there are some open beaches north of there to the Mansfield Cut (East Cut) but again the aforementioned items apply there as well.

PM me if you need more info.

If you haven't gotten the TSB or done an AAL, this pic should convince you! Before the bed was almost touching the wheel. Tows allot better now as well. The truck is allot more stable. All in all, the load is probably around 4500 pds.
